  • Goliath: Claimed 10 percent of the dairy cow herd at Nature's Way

    Alisa Boswell|Updated Dec 25, 2016

PORTALES — When Nature's Way Dairy northeast of Portales lost 10 percent of its herd last December, it took six months to rebuild the numbers, said General Manager Jamie Kulesa. Kulesa said his dairy lost more than 300 cows, with 88 dying in the storm and 232 having to be sold to be butchered, because their teets had frozen, which was the case with many of the cows lost locally, according to Kulesa. "I think initially I was dealing with the logistics of getting back to normal. It was mainly taking care of cows and people. E...

  • Remember the precious things

PORTALES — I recently read a coworker's column in which he talked about having a hard time getting into the Christmas spirit this year. I could relate. I was also delayed in finding the spirit this year, and I couldn't grasp exactly why that was the case. I normally love Christmas. I love the twinkle lights, the stockings, the classic movies, like "It's a Wonderful Life" and "White Christmas," but more than anything, I love the way this time of year changes people — how the...

  • A great quote speaks to me

    Alisa Boswell|Updated Dec 18, 2016

I love music in general, and I love the notes and rhythm just as much as I love the lyrics, but I have noticed many people don’t focus on the words in songs. Maybe it’s the writer in me, but I have to have the story/message to go with a song or a movie. No matter how great the rhythm is in a song or the storyline in a movie, the words being sung or the story being told has to reach me. I’ve also noticed that the songs I love the most are those with little play on the radio, and the lines from movies that capture my atten...

  • Here's some insight about yours truly; no quiz required

    Alisa Boswell|Updated Dec 12, 2016

I never participate in those Facebook chain posts where it asks you to answer questions like • what’s your age? • have you ever been married or divorced? • what was the last thing you ate? Because honestly, I’ve always thought they were pointless. What does that really tell anyone about you? It doesn’t give people insight into who you are as a person. Then I had this thought the other day: What would give people insight into who I am? These are the things that came to mind: • For about four years of my childhood, I obsessivel...

  • Counting blessings therapeutic

I've been a little bit of a roller coaster lately. I would perk up for brief periods of time, then the exhaustion and the feeling of "I don't want to be here" would set in again. I spent Monday-Wednesday of last week and the entire week before in a funk. I didn't want to be at work; I didn't want to socialize. I didn't want to do much of anything. I immediately perked up on Thanksgiving Day when I woke up and knew my parents and other family would be getting into town in a few short hours. I had a wonderful weekend filled...
