  • Statistics: Burglaries up

    The city of Portales saw an above-normal number of burglaries in 2010, but a significant decrease in DWI cases, according to city Police Department statistics. “We did have an increase in several areas,” said Portales Police Deputy Chief Lonnie Berry, adding officers had been busy. However, Berry said the rates of solved cases were good. Last year, 165 burglaries were reported, the highest number in at least six years, according to department annual reports.     Despite a smell of smoke, firefighters found no fire at Brown Early Childhood Center Wednesday morning. Julie Miller, administrative assistant to the superintendent, said students were moved to the new, kindergarten section of the building to keep them safe and warm.     Portales and Dora school districts are each holding a Public School Capital Improvements Tax Election on Tuesday. Polling takes place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. The “two-mill levy” in each district raises money for equipment, maintenance, remodeling and repairs. For both districts, approval of the mill levy won’t raise taxes, but will continue a tax that has been in effect for decades.     Elementary and middle school students will be spelling it out for the county this Saturday. Fourteen students from three county school districts are to compete in the annual Roosevelt County Spelling Bee. The winner of the senior division, sixth- through eighth-graders, receives a $500 scholarship to Eastern New Mexico University and a chance to compete at the state level.     Tearing down three dormitories and building a new one is more cost-effective than renovations, Eastern New Mexico University administrators have said. ENMU regents voted to demolish Lincoln, DeBaca and Chaves halls, all unoccupied dorms, at their meeting Jan. 19.
