  • Perez withdraws from magistrate judge race

    In the magistrate judge race, Eastern New Mexico University police officer Charles Perez has withdrawn his candidacy and KENW News and Public Affairs Director for FM James “Jim” Lee has stepped into the contest. Both men are Democrats. Republican Linda Short is also running for magistrate judge in November. Perez withdrew Aug. 27, and the Roosevelt County Democrat Party filed Lee’s candidacy Sept. 7, said Linda Connelly of the County Clerk’s Office.     The harvest of corn for silage has gone smoothly in Roosevelt and Curry counties, and yields have varied around the area, according to farmers and harvesters. Most corn grown in the area is chopped for silage, which is used to feed cattle, said Kevin Breshears of SPRA-Green Custom Harvesting. Roosevelt County farmer Rick Ledbetter said the corn silage harvest is going strong, and he has finished early.     Forget the better mousetrap — I wish someone would build a better Band-Aid. I was chopping an onion one night, in between breaks to let my eyes stop stinging and watering, when I cut my finger instead of the onion.     Cows have regular pedicures. Really. Dairy owners use pedicures — hoof trimming — along with a variety of other methods to keep their cows comfortable, and thus giving milk.     During his field trip to the Roosevelt County Fair, Portales third-grader Nathan Rose said he was able to pet every kind of animal, except a chicken. He wasn’t allowed to pet chickens because they bite, he explained.     An Eastern New Mexico University program that allows working nurses to get their bachelor of science in nursing degree has received a state grant that will mostly go to scholarships.
