Elida students brought together baked goodies and good will to help a well-loved teacher recently. Elida High School’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes held a baked goods auction at the Jan. 22 Dora/Elida basketball game and raised $6,400 for agriculture teacher Rod Savage. Savage was diagnosed with kidney problems about a week before the game, FCA sponsor and basketball coach Darrell Chenault said. A rundown 1907 store and boarding house has a new lease on life as a memorabilia-filled gathering place in Elida. A local girl is walking “a pathway to my dream” as she prepares for the lead role in a play to be performed in front of 600 people. Patricia Romero, the 14-year-old daughter of Cannon Air Force Base Forces Support Squadron Marketing Director Yolanda Romero, is portraying Robin Hood in the play by the same name at the Joint Air Force and Navy Youth Conference, for people who work with youth, in Dallas. Dora High School senior Sarah Walker has touched hearts with a lot of hugs and not a word. Sarah was crowned Miss DHS at the school’s homecoming celebration Jan. 16. She has Angelman’s Syndrome, a chromosome disorder that causes developmental delays, particularly in speech. A cement distribution facility expected to employ three to six local residents is moving to Elida. The terminal is to distribute bulk cement products around eastern New Mexico and west Texas for GCC America Inc., a subsidiary of cement company Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua, according to a news release from the Roosevelt County Community Development Corporation. The Portales City Council voted Tuesday to support the formation of a new regional water authority, under certain conditions. The council approved a resolution supporting House Bill 15, in its current state, which would establish an Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority to manage the Ute Water Pipeline project. Elida has been undergoing a four-year-long cleanup aimed at making it a more attractive place to live. Four candidates are vying for mayor in this year’s Portales municipal election, and two of five city councilor races are contested. Roosevelt County is facing state funding cuts that will limited it to repairing about half as many road surfaces as in past years. The issue came before the Roosevelt County Commissioners at their meeting Tuesday. In the 2008-2009 fiscal year, the county received about $432,000 from three Local Government Road Fund programs. This year, the county is expecting to receive about $258,000 if both rounds of cuts are approved.
