Martin Luther King was closed south of West Seventh Street most of Friday after a crew installing larger capacity sewer pipes pierced an uncharted water line near the intersection. City Manager Joe Thomas said most of the water was diverted to a nearby ditch. Some minor amounts of water, however, trickled along the east curb of MLK north of West Seventh. Thomas said when finished, the new sewer lines will provide sufficient capacity to stop backups being experienced on the west side of Clovis....
Rebecca Lynn Eminger figures it's a David vs. Goliath type fight, but she's not going to give up a parcel of her land without a fight. In a court filing, Southwestern Public Service Company contends they need less than 6 acres of Eminger's land off New Mexico 88 for construction of a transmission line. SPS cites eminent domain as its right to the property. Eminger, 65, says the acreage is part of 42 acres of what was once used to graze cattle but is now in the Conservation Reserve Program that she wants to sell. She said the...
STEPHENVILLE, Texas — After three blowout losses, the struggling Eastern New Mexico University baseball team at least made Tarleton State work on Sunday. ENMU, outscored by TSU 42-9 in the series coming into Sunday, battled the Texans into the sixth inning scoreless before Tarleton plated four runs and went on to a 6-3 win. It was the ninth loss in a row for ENMU (11-10, 0-4 LSC), which takes an 8-1 home record into a 3 p.m. start on Tuesday against New Mexico Highlands at Greyhound Field. Senior right-hander Jas Shergill (1-...
ALBUQUERQUE — Pay no particular attention to Las Cruces High's 71-58 win over Clovis High's boys at The Rock in January, CHS coach Matt King says. "We're not the same team we were then, and they're not (either)," he said on Friday on the eve of tonight's 8 p.m. Class 5A title matchup at The Pit. "It's important to look at that game and learn from it, but we're two different teams." CMI correspondent photo: Joshua Lucero Wildcat senior John Dawson struggles to keep p...
ALBUQUERQUE — It'll be just like old times this afternoon at the Pit. When Clovis High's girls face Mayfield for the Class 5A state title at 4 p.m., it'll be the fifth time since 1999 that the teams have faced off in the finals, including three times in a four-year span from 2004-07. ALBUQUERQUE — Melrose girls coach Toby Bostwick expected to have a competitive team this season, but even he's a little surprised the fifth-seeded Lady Buffaloes are in position to defend their Class 1A state title. "If you'd have told me at (the) EPAC (tournament in early January) that we'd be in the state finals, I'd have probably laughed at you," he said Friday as his team prepared for today's noon championship game at The Pit. A new bill that would exempt some economic development information from public viewing is supposed to protect local development corporations from losing out on deals and possible litigation, according to Chase Gentry, executive director of the Clovis Industrial Development Corp. The House bill, sponsored by Anna Crook, R-Clovis, has been criticized by some as denying public information regarding public money, but Crook believes the bill is beneficial to the promotion of local development. "It is only in the time of negotiatio...
When the Portales Rams face Shiprock in tonight's Class 3A boys state quarterfinal game at Rio Rancho's Santa Ana Star Center, they'll see a lot of the same faces as last year when they played the Chieftains in Shiprock and lost 75-60 in a round-of-16 game. PHS coach Rickie McBroom, an assistant last season, hopes playing on a neutral floor and having a bit more experienced roster will help this time. Still, he said the Rams' work is cut out. "They're a lot of the same kids as last year," McBroom said of the Chieftains...

LAS VEGAS, N.M. — The recent woes continued for Eastern New Mexico University's baseball team on Tuesday. Once 11-1 and playing for the first time in nine days, the Greyhounds (11-6) dropped their fifth consecutive game on Tuesday when New Mexico Highlands erased a 9-1 deficit to pull out an 11-10 victory. ENMU won three of four games at Highlands earlier this season, but in the loss the Hounds were unable to hang on to a 15-0 lead, losing 22-16. Meantime, the Cowboys (12-5) are on a role of late and stretched their w...

Melrose Mayor Tuck Monk said his village has a water system that was installed in the 1920s that desperately needs repairs, so he was pleased that the Senate approved funding for it. The consensus of area leadership's response to the state Senate's capital outlay bill is that they're grateful for what they can get from the $222 million approved Sunday for projects even though money was spread thin. As the bill moves to the House, 11 of 29 projects requested by Roosevelt...
Portales High girls coach Clay Stout isn't all that concerned about seeing Lovington for the fourth time in just over a month. The Lady Rams (21-6), seeded third in the Class 3A state tournament, meet the sixth-seeded Lady Wildcats (19-9) in a 3 p.m. quarterfinal contest today at The Pit in Albuquerque. PHS has managed to win the first three matchups. "I don't really think it matters if we're playing Lovington for the fourth time or somebody else that we haven't seen," Stout said. "It's important to get off to a good start....

A presidential sequestration order will reduce payments to Quay and Roosevelt counties under the U.S. Department of Interior's Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) program. Failure to reach a deal on the national budget and avoid sequestration has resulted in a 5.1 percent reduction in the PILT program, which compensates counties for property taxes not collected on federal land. Quay, Roosevelt and De Baca counties use PILT money for general operations, including fire departments and other local services. Curry County has no...
Earning an extra dollar an hour could mean loosening the pinch in a person's budget but it still no way to live, says Michael Hatch of Portales who's tired of living the paycheck-to-paycheck shuffle. Hatch, 23, makes 33 cents over the state's $7.50 minimum wage as a convenience store employee. Hatch was a minimum wage earner not too long ago, but even at what he makes now, he feels his income limits him from the luxuries of life, and sometimes even the basics. An extra dollar...
Midwestern State wasted little time finishing off a three-game Lone Star Conference softball series sweep of Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday. Catcher Kim Jerrick and third baseman Kelley Schaefer blasted three-run homers and the 22nd-ranked Mustangs run-ruled ENMU for the third game in a row, winning 10-2 at Zia Softball Field in a game which lasted five innings. MSU (19-4, 3-0 LSC), which entered the day with a .404 team batting average, pounded out 10 hits in the contest. The Mustangs finished the series with 30...
No matter how many points the Portales Rams score, almost never does anyone stand out. PHS put together a dominating first quarter — first half, really — and cruised past West Las Vegas 62-51 on Saturday night at the Ram Athletic Center, yet it wasn't until senior Zach Blaeser converted the first of two free throws with 3:17 left in the game — giving him a team-high 10 points — that anyone reached double figures. CMI correspondent: Joshua Lucero PHS junior Zach Campbell goes up for two points against West Las Vegas senior...
