  • No. 22 Mustangs complete sweep of Zias

    CMI staff

Midwestern State wasted little time finishing off a three-game Lone Star Conference softball series sweep of Eastern New Mexico University on Saturday. Catcher Kim Jerrick and third baseman Kelley Schaefer blasted three-run homers and the 22nd-ranking Mustangs run-ruled ENMU for the third game in a row, winning 10-2 at Zia Softball Field in a game which lasted five innings. MSU (19-4, 3-0 LSC), which entered the day with a .404 team batting average, pounded out 10 hits in the contest. The Mustangs finished the series with 30... Full story

  • Clovis man charged again in double homicide

    CMI staff

A Clovis man whose double-murder indictment was recently quashed by the state Supreme Court was hit with the same charges Friday in Magistrate Court. Enrique Deleon is accused of murder in the September 2011 shooting deaths of Joe Valero, 44, and Lupita Casteneda, 25, both of Clovis. Enrique Delon Deleon waived his right to a preliminary examination Friday on murder and an assortment of other felony charges stemming from the shooting at a backyard barbecue, according to...

  • Mustangs overcome Zias' fast start for sweep

    CMI staff

Eastern New Mexico University's softball team got off to a rousing start in the second game of Friday's Lone Star Conference-opening softball doubleheader against Midwestern State at Zia Softball Field when freshman right fielder Marley Pinon belted a first-inning grand slam. Unfortunately, the Zias weren't able to hold off the 22nd-ranked Mustangs. MSU finally pulled away with 10 runs in the top of the sixth and beat the Zias 15-5 to complete a sweep. The game ended after six on the eight-run rule. In the opener, the...

  • Odds with Cats in state opener

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

If the Clovis Wildcats are heading into their first-round game with confidence, they've got plenty of reason to do so. Clovis is the fourth seed, and the top four seeds are 27-1 in the first round since the state went to a 16-team bracket in 2006. If the Wildcats were cautious going in, that would be OK, too. Since the format began, a double-digit seed has pulled an upset every season, including last year's win by Manzano in the 3-14 game. Wildcat coach Matt King said the Cats (20-6) are a little of both, but it has nothing...

  • Clovis city officials: Prairie dog poisoning finished

    CMI staff

The deed is done. The last of a potent poison aimed at putting a dent in the prairie dog population at Ned Houk Park was applied Friday, according to Clovis Parks and Recreation Director Bill Bizzell. The prairie dog eradication program was approved March 1 at a special city commission meeting. Adjacent landowners appealed to the city for help, saying they burrowing rodents would spread to their crops and land. Up to $25,000 was approved for an emergency budget transfer to purchase 250 containers of Rozol rodenticide to... Full story

  • Clovis school board to consider graduation date change

    CMI staff

Clovis Municipal Schools Superintendent Terry Myers is bringing in the Board of Education to help make a decision on changing the date of the CHS graduation. The event, slated for May 18, falls on the same day as the final day of the state's spring athletic championships. The board will hold a special meeting March 18 to discuss the issue as well as review future calendars for other scheduling conflicts. Myers said Friday the only suggestion that has been recommended so far is moving graduation from Saturday to Sunday. Joel... Full story

  • Portales moves on to Albuquerque with win over St. Michael's

    Kevin Baird CMI staff writer

Hannah Cissell's three 3-pointers in the second half carried third-seeded Portales to a 37-34 victory over 14th-seeded St. Michael's in the first round of the state girls Class 3A tournament on Friday night at the Ram Athletic Center. "If she didn't knock down those threes," coach Clay Stout said, "we'd be in a world of hurt." Cissell, the only senior on the Lady Rams' roster, played her last game in Portales. She led the team with 11 points, while junior Savannah Vincent... Full story

  • Top-seeded Lady Cats rout Alamogordo

Alamogordo's Stephanie Anderson buried a 3-pointer on the Lady Tigers' first trip down the court Friday night. Suffice it to say, they had few other highlights. CMI staff photo: Tony Bullocks Clovis sophomore Danni Williams knocks away a inbound pass to Alamogordo's freshman Lauren Guinn in the third quarter of Friday night's first round playoff action at The Rock. • Slow-starting Hounds ousted early

    CMi staff

ALLEN, Texas — Eastern New Mexico University's men needed a good start, or at least a decent one, if it hoped to beat Tarleton State in Thursday's quarterfinals of the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament. What the Greyhounds got was a basket with a lid on it, or so it seemed — and it carried well into the second half. The Hounds shot 35 percent from the field — just off their season-worst — and, despite a valiant comeback down the stretch, were unable to get all that close in a 72-59 loss to the Texans. ENMU (12-15), s...

    Christina Calloway CMI staff writer

A 20-year-old male inmate has given Roosevelt and Curry counties notice he may sue, alleging he was sexually assaulted by a Roosevelt County detention officer in December. In the tort claims notice, the man's attorney, Jennifer Burrill, said the Roosevelt and Curry detention centers failed to protect and provide adequate medical treatment for her client. The inmate was officially in the custody of the Curry County detention center, but according to the tort was transferred to Roosevelt County because he was attacked by an... Full story

  • Stout wary of sub-.500 St. Mike's

    CMI staff

Don't be deceived by St. Michael's sub-.500 record, Portales girls coach Clay Stout says. The Lady Horsemen, seeded 14th at 13-15, are perfectly capable of giving third-seeded PHS (20-6) a run for its money in tonight's round-of-16 Class 3A girls matchup at the Ram Athletic Center. "They're pretty good — in fact, I think they're real good," Stout said. "They have a tough district (5-3A) with Hope (Christian) and Santa Fe Indian." The Huskies and Lady Braves, in fact, are the only teams seeded ahead of the young but surging La...

  • Legislator pursues cloud seeding

    Christina Calloway CMI staff writer

Desperate times call for desperate measures, which is why Sen. Stuart Ingle, R-Portales, said funding is needed to reinstitute a cloud seeding program in Roosevelt and Lea counties. Ingle's bill to secure $150,000 for a weather modification fund, specifically cloud seeding, is working its way to the Senate floor. Ingle hopes the cloud seeding program will help with the lack of moisture in the area caused by what he considers one of the worst droughts in New Mexican history. "I'm having a hard time getting money," Ingle said....

  • Hounds, Zias face higher-seeded teams in LSC tourney

    Dave Wagner CMI staff writer

Eastern New Mexico University's basketball teams are in the Lone Star Conference postseason tournament. Now the challenge is to overcome teams who have higher seeds. ENMU's women (7-21), seeded eighth, take on top-seeded Midwestern State (21-5) in a 5 p.m. (MST) quarterfinal matchup today at the Allen (Texas) Events Center. Meantime, the men (12-14) face third-seeded Tarleton State (17-9) at 1:30 p.m. (MST) on Thursday. Clearly, the Zias have an uphill battle, although they do own a 70-62 win over MSU on New Year's Eve at...

  • Cats beat Rams in baseball season opener

    CMI staff

The Clovis and Portales baseball teams are relatively young this season. The difference Tuesday was the Wildcats have most of their team in place while the Rams don't. Senior shortstop Joe Shelley drove in four runs and the Cats used two big innings to rough up the Rams 14-1 at Ram Field in the season opener for both teams. CMI staff photo: Tony Bullocks Clovis sophomore pitcher Matt Lanier threw three effective innings Tuesday night in the Wildcats' season-opening 14-1...

  • Supertiebreakers dominate in PHS-Artesia split

    CMI staff

The Artesia and Portales High tennis teams could have put in for overtime on Tuesday. The boys and girls squads combined to play eight supertiebreakers that almost resulted in not enough light to finish play. The Lady Rams won the girls dual 7-2, going 3-2 in supertiebreakers, while Artesia swept all three of them in the boys clash and posted an 8-1 victory over the Rams. In the girls dual, the Lady Rams got off to a 3-0 lead in doubles, winning twice on supertiebreakers, then split the six singles contests — four of which w... Full story

    CMI staff

RANGER, Texas — Senior Kaity Ray took first place in breakaway roping to lead the Eastern New Mexico University women's rodeo team to a second-place finish over the weekend in the Ranger College rodeo. The Zias finished with 220 points, trailing Tarleton State with 375. Ray, from Los Lunas, split first and second place in the first-go in breakaway and came in second in the short go, good enough to give her the win. Other highlights for the Zias included a third-place finish in goat tying by junior Katelynn Lide after a s...

ABILENE, Texas — It was a lost weekend for the Eastern New Mexico University baseball team in the Whitten Inn Classic, hosted by Abilene Christian. The Greyhounds (11-5) absorbed their third consecutive loss to Lone Star Conference competition on Sunday, this one a 14-8 setback to a Cameron squad which won for only the fourth time in 13 outings. The Aggies rode a 13-hit attack and strong relief pitching to the victory. Junior left-hander Will Thomas (1-0) relieved starter Brian Schwabe and escaped a five-run ENMU fourth by g... Full story

"It's a mad house up there," said state Rep. George Dodge, D-Santa Rosa, who's district includes Roosevelt and Curry counties. "The last 14 days are the toughest." Dodge, who chairs the Agriculture and Water Resources Committee, said his concerns are focused on threats of water speculation. "There are entities that... Full story
