  • Our people: Clovis resident Fred Tate says working is his passion

Compiled by CMI staff writer Ryan Schaap

For Fred K. Tate, 80, work has never been an issue for him. Since he was a child, Tate remembers working to make money for his family. Today he owns Pop's place and has been running the restaurant for 13 years. From Clantonville, Ark., he moved to Tulsa, Okla., where he did electric work on aircrafts like the B-66s and B-47s. From there he moved to Clovis where he got a job at Sears working on appliances. After retirement in 1997, Tate was not ready to slow down. He started...

  • Tarleton State 'big' test for Hounds

    Dave Wagner CMI staff writer

You might think playing two top-20 teams to start the season and coming away with a split would be OK for a lot of people. Not third-year Tarleton State coach Cary Fowler, whose team edged then-No. 4 Midwestern State 20-17 in its opener before losing to then-No. 20 Abilene Christian 34-31 in last week's Lone Star Conference Football Festival at Cowboys Stadium. "I want to win every game, and that's the way I approach it," he said. CMI correspondent: Joshua Lucero ENMU senior...

  • CAT TRACKS: Special teams nearly saved Cats

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

ALBUQUERQUE — Chad Adcox has only three games to his head coaching resume, but he already knew he didn't want the ball in Kamal Cass' hands late. "The last punt, I said, 'Punt it out of bounds,'" the longtime Manzano assistant said after the Monarchs' 26-20 win over the Clovis Wildcats on Saturday. "'I don't want to give them a chance to run it back. I don't care if it's a 10-yard punt.'" The punt was a little longer, and didn't quite get out of bounds. It got to Cass near t...

  • Cats absorb 26-20 loss to Manzano

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

ALBUQUERQUE — The Clovis Wildcats' ongoing troubles at F.M. Wilson Stadium got started early Saturday, as their offense got started a little too late. Host Manzano posted 358 total yards and limited Clovis to just three first downs and 56 first-half yards before holding on to win 26-20 Saturday afternoon to remain undefeated. Carlos Perez smothered a Wildcats onside kick attempt with 1:55 to play, right after they had snuck to within one score on a Kamal Cass 73-yard punt return. Manzano ran out the clock to give Clovis (... Full story

  • Texico holds off Portales

    Dave Wagner CMI staff writer

TEXICO — It took the Portales Rams a while to get going Friday night. By the time they did, they were in too deep a hole to escape. Senior running back Shay Harrison rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns as Texico posted a 35-23 victory in a game that was moved to Texico earlier this week because of lighting issues at Greyhound Stadium. • CCS shows improvement in second matchup with NMSD

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

Two things were clear Friday night at Jim Hill Field. First, Clovis Christian is a much better team than when the season started. Second, New Mexico School for the Deaf is still the better team. Two weeks after delivering a 55-0 defeat to the Eagles at home, the visiting Roadrunners faced a tougher challenge in the rematch, but still finished with a comfortable 56-6 win. • Area finally gets rain

    Ryan Schaap CMI Staff Writer

A smattering of much needed rain doused parched farm fields across Roosevelt County and National Weather Service forecasters are saying it could be the start of even more. The rain overnight Wednesday is the result of a huge cold front sweeping into the region from Canada. Weather service Meteorologist Jack Boston said Thursday that it looks like the beginning of a roller coaster series of high and low pressure that will likely bring more rain over the next two weeks. "Thursday was the coolest day due to the cloud cover and...

  • Eligibility issues hound Greyhounds

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

Eligibility issues continue to hound the Greyhounds, with several football players likely being held out for Eastern New Mexico University's game Friday at Cowboys Stadium. In most cases, university officials note that athletes, who have also been held out from previous games, have done nothing wrong, and are waiting for reinstatement from the NCAA clearinghouse. The athletes were missing paperwork required to be kept by the college's compliance office, and the errors were caught by Kristen Schmitt, who started this year as... Full story

  • Wildcats cruise past Highland

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

You know things have been easy for the Clovis Wildcats when it's two weekends into September, the extra point team has come out 18 times and the punt team has yet to see the field. Clovis didn't play a perfect game by any stretch, but Kamal Cass and an opportunistic defense more than covered up any and all mistakes in a 67-12 blowout of Highland Friday night at Leon Williams Stadium. • Muleshoe overpowers Rams

    Dave Wagner CMI staff writer

MULESHOE — The game started out well enough for Portales. The Rams threw Muleshoe senior running back Junior Baca for losses totaling 11 yards on the first two plays. Then senior quarterback Caleb Wood began to go to the air, and the Rams had no answers. The Mules scored on their first eight possessions — they also had a defensive touchdown — and cruised to a 64-0 thumping on Friday night. • Rams set for trip to Muleshoe

    Dave Wagner CMI staff writer

The Muleshoe Mules got into a shootout in last week's season opener, while the Portales Rams were involved in a defensive battle. Something has to give with the border rivals collide in a 6:30 p.m. (MDT) kickoff on Friday in Muleshoe. While Muleshoe is coming off a 56-40 loss at Shallowater in its opener last week, the Rams were locked in an overtime clash at Las Vegas Robertson and lost to the Cardinals 13-7. "We're going to focus on getting better," first-year Rams coach Jamie Ramirez said. "We have to secure the football... Full story

  • My turn: Back on campaign trail

    Wendel Sloan CMI staff writer

Now that Willie Nelson and I have returned from tending his "garden party" in a South Texas forest, we are resuming our Green Tea Party candidacy. We lost track of time while my cousin, Chef Juandel, whipped up special treats from my running mate's garden. My other cousins, The Anglo Mariachi Cowboy and Bootlegger Sloan, joined us with peyote-seasoning and moonshine-cooking-sherry for Chef to work his magic. Under the influence of backwoods dining, Willie and I stumbled into the epiphany that we only need 11 votes to win. If... Full story

  • Cats set to face Jaguars

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

One way or another, Bill Moon planned to be in Clovis tonight for the victory that puts Eric Roanhaus on top of New Mexico prep history. "I wouldn't miss this game for the world," Santa Fe Capital's coach said, "except where my seat's going to be." Moon said he and his Jaguars come into the 7 p.m. contest at Leon Williams Stadium aiming for a win. But just about everybody else — Capital administration included — believes the Wildcats will roll over the rebuilding Jaguars to give Roanhaus his 311th career victory. The bel...

  • Wildcats romp to put Roanhaus alone at top

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

As junior Steven Beckum plunged into the end zone, the cannon exploded for one final time Friday night in the south end zone of Leon Williams Stadium, and the only head coach Clovis has known since 1978 ascended to the top of the New Mexico wins list. In a game that quickly turned into a coronation of coach Eric Roanhaus, the Wildcats cruised by rebuilding Santa Fe Capital 55-0 in a game called midway through the third quarter. "I'm glad it's over," said Roanhaus, who has... Full story
