Charges in an Aug. 13 Muleshoe homicide will be presented to a grand jury, Police Chief Brian Frieda said Thursday. Frieda said police have a “particular person of interest” in the case and are continuing to conduct interviews and investigate the incident. “We kind of have an idea who this is,” he said. “They’re being cooperative and they’re not a threat to the community.” Frieda said there have been no charges filed in connection with the case and he does not have a timeline for when a grand jury might hear the case. Texico schools are planning a one hour delay for the school day on Friday. Clovis Municipal Schools will announce any weather delays for Friday at 8 p.m. Thursday via their Web site. Grady schools let out at 2:45 p.m. and Melrose schools released at 2:45 p.m. A Clovis Christian School spokesperson said the school ran Thursday on schedule and usually follows CMS’s delay plan. The Clovis Police Department will be trading doughnuts for dollars Friday as part of its annual Shop with a Cop fundraising drive. Starting at 6:45 a.m., officers will be at Daylight Doughnuts on North Prince Street collecting donations to fund the Shop with a Cop program. A 20-year-old Clovis man was arrested Wednesday on charges of sexual exploitation of children. Jeremy J. Montano turned himself in to Curry County Sheriff’s investigators and was jailed in lieu of $25,000 bond. He is charged with five counts possession of child pornography. The Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a $8.1 million contract to complete construction of a flight simulator facility at Cannon Air Force Base, according to a release from U.S. Sen. The demolition of 278 Gemini Housing units, an asbestos abatement plan in 250 Chavez Manor units and the relocation of 90 military families will be the focus of two town hall meetings Thursday at Cannon Air Force Base, according to a news release. Cool temperatures, wind and snow swept across the area Friday. Strong winds whipped through the eastern Plains during the afternoon, gusting to 38 mph in Clovis in the early evening. Temperatures hovering in the upper 30s and low 40s dropped to freezing in the late afternoon, when snow flurries fell. The last time the area received snow on April 13 was a decade ago, when 1.3 inches fell, according to the National Weather Service. The March 23 tornado that thrashed through Clovis has claimed another life. Walter “Snap” Cravy, 90, of Clovis died Thursday evening at Lubbock Covenant Hospital, according to his son, Thomas V. Cravy. Cravy said his father spent 20 days in the hospital before succumbing to the severe injuries he sustained in the tornado. “He died peacefully,” Cravy said. And for the second straight year, the campaign fell short of its campaign goal. The campaign’s final tally was $381,079, or 97 percent of the $392,500 goal and 6.75 percent above last year’s total. Cannon Air Force Base is this year’s recipient of the Commander-in-Chief’s 2005 Installation Excellence Award for Air Combat Command, according to a Cannon press release. CNJ staff reports MULESHOE — A Bailey County jury found a Muleshoe man innocent of a murder charge on Friday, District Judge Gordon Green said. Larry Brent Kitchens, 52, was found innocent of murdering Derwin Wyn Beauchamp, 43, in October of 2003 at the home of Vince Simnacher. Kitchens is also charged with killing his ex-wife, Rhonda June Kitchens, 48, and Simnacher, 61, with an assault rifle. The two remaining cases will be tried at a date not yet decided, Green said. CNJ staff reports A child care center in Clovis was briefly evacuated about noon on Wednesday when workers smelled smoke in the building. A burned-out air conditioner motor caused the smell at Barbara Ann’s Child Care Center on West 21st Street, officials said, and there was no fire.
