FARWELL – On paper, it looked like an even matchup. And for a half, it was just that. Junior guards Braddock Foster (24) and Hudson Agee (15) and freshman guard Coy Miller (12) accounted for most of the scoring for the Steers (14-3), ranked 11th in Texas Class 2A by MaxPreps. Agee, scoreless at halftime, and F...
As the old saying goes, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. Down by a point and in need of a break in the closing seconds, Clovis High's girls got one when Amarillo Caprock's inbounds pass instead hit the bottom of the backboard with 5.2 seconds left, giving the Lady Cats the ball with no time coming off the clock. They took advantage of the opportunity. Senior guard Amanda De La Rosa found sophomore post Kerrington Goff with an entry pass, and she converted a 3-point...

DALLAS - A casual stroll through an East Texas oilfield on a bright, moonlit evening ended with the barrel of a Smith and Wesson pressed to Larry Wansley's head as he stood next to a freshly dug grave. Wansley can't pinpoint the exact moment he made the decision to leave undercover work behind. But the sound of whirring rigs and the smell of loam as a corrupt sheriff led the FBI agent to his reckoning remain vivid. More than 45 years later, Wansley is the director of...

Nothing went right for Clovis High's boys over the first five minutes of Friday's clash with Lubbock Cooper at Rock Staubus Gymnasium. The Pirates scored on their first six possessions and built a 16-0 lead. Meantime, the Wildcats didn't get on the board until senior guard Jayden Cox nailed a 3-pointer with two minutes left in the period. In a game featuring almost exclusively back-and-forth runs by both sides, the Cats (6-6) had the final answer, getting two free throws each...
The U.S. Embassy in Ukraine notes that, “U.S. policy is centered on realizing and strengthening a democratic, prosperous, and secure Ukraine more closely integrated into Europe and Euro-Atlantic structures.” A June 13 briefing from the White House says in part, “It is the policy of the United States to assist Ukraine in maintaining a credible defense and deterrence capability.” What are the U.S. goals in the Ukraine war? What do we want to accomplish? When do we know that we...
Three out of four low-income households in New Mexico struggle with legal issues impacting basic needs like housing, financial stability, access to social and medical benefits. New Mexico’s civil legal service providers handle thousands of cases every year, but a lack of capacity caused them to turn away more than half of the people seeking help last year. The New Mexico Commission on Access to Justice works with civil legal service providers to ensure equal access to the justice system for the most vulnerable in our c...

Despite a 9-3 start to the season, veteran Clovis High girls coach Jeff Reed knows the Lady Wildcats are probably a ways away from competing with Class 5A's best. Saturday's finals in the Plateau Holiday tournament at Rock Staubus Gymnasium said as much. CHS held its own with Volcano Vista in the early going, but the Lady Hawks' pressure defense and 3-point shooting helped turn the game into a comfortable win for the Albuquerque-based squad, which pulled away to a 66-49...
Clovis High's boys gave it everything they had in Saturday's finals of the Montano Construction Holiday tournament at Rock Staubus Gymnasium. It was in the year 336 when Jesus’ birthday was declared to be Dec. 25. Roman Emperor Constantine had declared Christianity the empire’s official religion and the church in Rome turned the 25th into a celebration of Christ’s birth, and we’ve been celebrating the day ever since. But celebrating Christmas isn’t the only thing that’s happened on Dec. 25, and with help from The Associated Press and its “Today in History” feature along with the website onthisday.com, here are a few Christmas Day events that stand out: • On Dec....

She also expressed hope to utilize her platform t...

Peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. I grew up on them. They were the first thing I learned to make in the kitchen. That and a glass of milk. Microwaves hadn’t been invented yet. Playing basketball on a dirt patch in our back yard. That’s where I learned to dribble and shoot with one hand. And football in our front yard. When no one else was around, I’d take the hike from an imaginary center, drop back and throw to the trees, believing that I was the star quarterback in a universe I could only imagine. Those were simpl...
Luigi Mangione, the accused killer of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, is being hailed by many as a hero. There’s something profoundly wrong with that. From the time of Thompson’s murder on a Manhattan street caught in surveillance camera photos, to snippets of Mangione’s alleged movements while on the run, online praise for Mangione has run neck and neck with vitriol for health insurers. Google removed a flood of negative McDonald’s reviews after a fast-food employee in an Altoona, Pa., location reported Mangion...

A fall three days before a Clovis toddler’s death last month was the result of “rough play from his siblings,” a Clovis police report shows. The report also shows the 12-month-old boy and his siblings, ages 3 and 2, were taken from their home by New Mexico Children, Youth and Families Department about a year ago. They were returned to their mother on Oct. 23. That was about a month before Calian Skywater was hurt, his mother told police at Plains Regional Medical Center where Calian died after she reported he was not breat...
Over the years, maybe because of the way I grew up or because I chose the Marines as the cornerstone for my working life, I always hope for the best, but plan for the worst. While I hoped we were all going to be home for Christmas, I knew it would be a bad idea to turn in my rain suit and my jungle boots in November. This country is blessed in that we have oceans on either side of us, and borders that have at least amiable colleagues, if not exactly the best of friends...
