  • Police arrest six for fake money

    Clovis police say they have arrested six people so far while investigating area counterfeiting incidents, including a man they believe is responsible for producing the phony currency. Terry Maes, 30, of Clovis has confessed to manufacturing at least $2,500 in counterfeit money, Detective Matthew Solari said. “Basically through his confession he gave a detailed explanation of how he used real federal reserve notes, copied them, scanned them, lined them up,” Solari said. “It is a very long process to align front and back.... Full story

  • Attorneys have opposing views on sex offender laws

    New laws passed recently by the New Mexico legislature markedly increase penalties for sex offenders whose victims are children. Two criminal defense attorneys who have handled sex-related cases in the 9th Judicial District have opposite views of the new legislation.     A three-week undercover sting operation led to the arrest of George Ford, 28, who police say used the Internet to lure what he thought was a 14-year-old girl into a meeting. Ford actually had been corresponding with a state police agent via e-mail and arranged to meet her in the Clovis area, according to New Mexico State Police.   • Cannon Air Force Base going wild

    When the sun sets on the evening of Oct. 31, many Clovis parents will be helping their children get into costumes and walk the streets to collect candy and treats. The next night, a group of military spouses is hoping many of those same adults will put on their own — Wild West — costumes and come out to The Landing at Cannon Air Force Base for a night of entertainment for a purpose.   • Woman who 'found' baby is mother

    Portales police have arrested a woman who said Sunday that she found an abandoned baby in a park. Police said Tuesday they now believe the newborn belonged to the woman who said she found it while jogging in Rotary Park near her dorm room at Eastern New Mexico University. The 18-year-old woman is charged with filing a false report. The misdemeanor crime carries a maximum penalty of 364 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.   • Rape trial postponed

    The trial for a Clovis man accused of rape has been postponed until Feb. 2. John Jacobs’ trial had been scheduled for today and Wednesday in Curry County District Court. Jacobs’ attorney Gerald Baca said he was not prepared for the Clovis trial because he defended Jacobs in a Portales trial on Thursday and Friday.
