Tenth Judicial District Court Judge Ricky Purcell issued a preliminary injunction Monday barring Graves from preventing access by “any person authorized access by the Board of County Commissioners” to areas of the courthouse containing a fire alarm and DWI breathalyzer until a cou...

Fabian Guzman received 159 votes and said he was disqualified because of an e-mail sent on his behalf, even though he did not approve it. Guzman said the elections board didn’t disqualify eit...

  • Area men remember deadly march

    Darrell Todd Maurina

Lee Roach, 85, was one of 89 men from Curry County forced into the Bataan Death March on April 9, 1942. He said it was a lack of food and water that killed people. (CNJ photo by Eric Kluth) On Dec. 8, 1941, the Japanese Air Force followed up its surprise attack on Pearl Harbor with an assault on American air bases in the Philippines. Those bases were almost as undefended as the Pearl Harbor ships. “They just about wiped us out the first day; they caught everything on the ground,” said Lee Roach, now a Clovis retiree, the...

Kevin Mark Gardels has played in local bands and recorded music for years, but his upcoming album, “God’s Hands,” will have a different focus from much of his previous work. A year ago, Gardels was on the verge of death from myelofibrosis, a rare cancer for which the only treatment is a bone marrow transplant. Gardels was diagnosed with the disease in July of 2002 and his weight dropped from 280 pounds to 140 before a matching bone marrow donor was found and transplant surgery was performed in early 2003. He’s doing well now,...

  • Tradition plays huge part in Passover festival

    Darrell Todd Maurina

While most Christians in the Clovis area are preparing to celebrate Easter, a few area residents observed the far more ancient Jewish festival of Passover on Monday night and Tuesday. “In the Jewish religion, family is intertwined with the religion. There really is no separation of the religion from the family,” said Capt. Mike Nachshen, who was a Jewish lay leader at another military base before coming to Cannon Air Force Base. “Tradition is the other portion of it; it is a chance to basically tell the story of the exodu... Full story

  • Clovis woman dies at 108 years old

    Darrell Todd Maurina

Julie McKinney, believed to be the region’s oldest resident, died Sunday morning at the age of 108. McKinney, who would lay grass on soggy trails so her family’s covered wagon could travel faster, was an energetic sort. She was born before New Mexico became a state; loved to sing and dance; and in her later years would wake up her fellow nursing home residents with the sound of a rooster crow. But she was never grouchy and always kept a positive attitude, even in her final days, family and friends said. “She’s outlive...

Reporter's Notebook Curry County Sheriff Roger Hatcher spent Wednesday morning doing something he loves — speaking to third graders at Bella Vista Elementary about public safety. Hatcher said he visits different schools in Curry County each year to help educate young people about law enforcement, and works hard to teach children such things as the right and wrong way to use the 911 emergency number, how dangerous guns can be if used incorrectly, and why young people should never tell strangers their parents aren’t home. Stu...
