TEXICO – Whenever Portales High’s volleyball team needed a key point on Saturday, the Lady Rams knew where to go. Five-foot-11 junior middle hitter Skyler Massey compiled 19 kills, and the Lady Rams turned back defending Class 2A state champion Texico 25-17, 25-23, 18-25, 25-18 in a battle of top-five teams. Portales (10-7), ranked fourth in Class 4A by MaxPreps, erased an early five-point deficit in Game 4 after it looked like the Lady Wolverines (12-3), No. 3 this week in 2A, might be mounting a major comeback. “It was a...
Liz Elam wasn’t pleased with her start in Clovis High’s Wildcat Invite golf tournament on Tuesday at Colonial Park Golf Course, but she eventually sorted things out. Starting on the back nine, the Texico High senior shot six-over 42 from holes 10 through 18, then came back for even-par 36 on the front side, easily taking medalist honors for the day with her 78. “I don’t really know what happened,” Elam said of her slow start. “I wasn’t really that focused. “I told myself, ‘Don’t worry about the score.’ I just decided to play...
Jayden Jameson found his game just in time Thursday night. The senior right-hander struggled through a five-run Hobbs second – two errors in the frame didn’t help – before blanking the Eagles over the next four innings as Clovis High posted a come-from-behind 8-6 win in the second game of a District 4-5A doubleheader at Bell Park. Hobbs clinched a series win with a 17-12 verdict in Game 1 behind a nine-run third. The Cats (12-10, 2-4 district) close the regular season with three games against Roswell High this week – a 5 p.m...
Coming into this weekend’s season-ending Lone Star Conference series against St. Mary’s, Eastern New Mexico University’s softball team knew its work wasn’t quite done in a bid for an LSC tournament berth. It was done before Friday’s series-opening doubleheader, though. St. Edward’s, trailing the Greyhounds by two games, played its series at Texas Woman’s early this week due to weather concerns for the weekend in the Denton area. Needing a sweep – and three losses by the Hounds – the Rattlers dropped two of three to the Pionee...
Eastern New Mexico University's baseball team did what it needed on Sunday and remained alive for a possible Lone Star Conference tournament berth, although the Greyhounds' work is cut out. They opened an 8-0 lead through five innings against St. Mary's and earned a 10-5 win over the Rattlers at Greyhound Field, notching their second consecutive LSC series triumph. ENMU (21-25, 19-25 LSC) stands two games behind Arkansas-Fort Smith (21-23, 21-23) and St. Edward's (21-25,...
Essentially, there were two track meets going on in Friday's Wildcat Relays at Leon Williams Stadium – one for Rio Rancho, Artesia and Hobbs and another for everybody else. Clovis High's squads won the "other" meet – finishing fourth in both divisions. Rio Rancho took the boys title with 97 points to 95 for Artesia, 80 for Hobbs and 50 ½ for the Wildcats, and completed a sweep with 102 ½ on the girls side to 85 for Hobbs, 83 for Artesia and 60 for the Lady Wil...
In one inning on Sunday, Eastern New Mexico University's softball team nearly scored as many runs as were tallied combined during the rest of the weekend series. Senior designated player Taighen Whitzel capped an eight-run second with a grand slam, and the Greyhounds went on to blank Oklahoma Christian 8-0 and take the Lone Star Conference series at Greyhound Softball Field – their first series win all time against the Eagles. Saturday's doubleheader was a split, with each s...
Had things gone according to plan, Clovis High's tennis girls might be looking at a big District 4-5A win over Carlsbad. Illness limited junior Madita Evert, the Lady Wildcats' No. 1 singles player, to just doubles against the Cavegirls. Then sophomore Emily Bjorklund had to default at No. 4 singles due to a leg injury with a 6-1, 2-1 lead over Carlsbad freshman Charise Young. The final result was a 6-3 victory for the Cavegirls in the district opener for both sides. Carlsbad...
Manny Chavez appears to be rounding into form. The Portales High junior is the defending Class 4A state boys javelin champion, winning by nearly 27 feet at 177 feet, 2 inches, and he's already easily surpassed that mark this season. On Thursday, Chavez posted his third consecutive personal best with a throw of 192 feet in Portales' George-Love Relays at Greyhound Stadium. It was the highlight for the Rams, who finished 10th in the 14-team meet with 25 points. "We had better...
Former Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball assistant Daven Vo was chosen as the program’s next head coach in an announcement by the school on Thursday. A native of Oklahoma City, the 39-year-old Vo served for three years under outgoing ENMU coach Brent Owen as an assistant coach from 2020-23. Owen accepted the head coaching job at NCAA Division II Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C. After the program was shut down due to COVID-19 in 2020-21 in Owen’s and Vo’s first campaign, they helped the Greyhounds post a 1...
Clovis High's girls won two of three doubles matches on Monday to eke out a 5-4 tennis victory over Roswell Goddard at the CHS tennis courts. Meantime, the boys had no such concerns, rolling to a 9-0 sweep as the Rockets managed to win only 15 total games. It was the start of a busy week for the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats, all at home. Clovis is slated to host District 4-5A foe Roswell High in non-district duals today, with the actual district slate beginning on Friday...
Luciano Terilli had a tough time in his first pitching start for Eastern New Mexico University's baseball team on Sunday, but he sure delivered at the plate. So did almost everyone else. The junior left-hander, normally the Greyhounds' closer, was thrust into the starting role in the wind-blown finale of a Lone Star Conference series against Arkansas-Fort Smith at Greyhound Field. He lasted three innings on the mound, giving up eight runs, but as the designated hitter from the...
Eastern New Mexico University men’s basketball coach Brent Owen has accepted the head coaching job at Lenoir-Rhyne University, an NCAA Division II program in Hickory, N.C. In a release from ENMU, Owen said the decision comes with “the opportunity to get my children closer to their grandparents and cousins and to put my wife, Ashley, in a better position for her career.” Owen was hired by ENMU prior to the 2020-21 season, which was later canceled due to COVID-19. After a 7-18 record in 2021-22, the Hounds won 17 games the f...
Midwestern State's Addison Lindemann did it all in this week's Lone Star Conference softball series against Eastern New Mexico University at Greyhound Softball Field. The freshman right-hander tossed 13 innings and allowed just two runs, including her first collegiate shutout with a 3-0 victory in Friday's series finale. She also delivered a two-run, first-inning homer that set the tone in that one. The Mustangs (7-29, 5-22 LSC), second from the bottom in the league coming...
Thank goodness Eastern New Mexico University's baseball team came back for a stunning win in Friday's Lone Star Conference series opener. Otherwise, the rest of the weekend didn't go too well. After ENMU pulled out a 6-5 win in the opener, Texas-Permian Basin completed a 3-1 series win by taking Sunday's early-morning finale 16-8 at Greyhound Field. The contest was moved up five hours to an 8 a.m. start as the teams tried to beat the winds that enveloped the area as the day...
Ruger Bravo found himself in an unusual position on Friday night. With no relief appearances since his freshman season in 2022, Bravo came in from the bullpen in the sixth inning charged with protecting a one-run lead in the opener of a key four-game Lone Star Conference series against Texas-Permian Basin. The senior left-hander allowed no runs over four two-hit innings, and the Greyhounds held on for a 6-5 victory at Greyhound Field. The teams were scheduled for two seven-inning tilts on Saturday. They’ll complete the s...
CANYON, Texas – Unfortunately, it wasn't Eastern New Mexico University's day on Saturday. Playing in the NCAA Division II men's basketball regionals for the first time in 20 years, the Greyhounds held a six-point lead heading into the late stages of the half. But third-seeded Colorado Mesa and standout 6-foot-9 junior forward Trevor Baskin were too much in the end, and the Mavericks pulled away late for a 95-77 victory. Baskin, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference's p...
CANYON, Texas – Unfortunately, it wasn’t Eastern New Mexico University’s day on Saturday. Averaging just over 90 points per game during the season, the Greyhounds suffered through several long droughts and dropped a 95-77 decision to Colorado Mesa at West Texas A&M’s First United Bank Center. Six-foot-9 junior forward Trevor Baskin, the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference’s player of the year, scored 31 points and grabbed 13 rebounds for the third-seeded Mavericks (28-4). They advanced to a 4 p.m. (MDT) Sunday semifinal...
MELROSE – Clearly, Melrose is one of the handful of top teams in a competitive Class 1A boys basketball field. On Saturday, the fourth-seeded Buffaloes advanced to the 1A state quarterfinals, scheduled for today at Bernalillo H.S., with a 51-36 victory over No. 13 Mesilla Valley. Still, they know that if they want to make a deep run, they'll have to pick up the pace. "We're glad to get the 'dub,' but it wasn't the way we wanted to win," said senior Michael Cardonita, who finis...
This isn't the way Clovis High's boys envisioned the season coming to an end. Albuquerque High came into The Rock for Saturday night's first-round Class 5A state tournament game and dominated virtually from the get-go, riding a 31-point outing from senior guard Isaiah Maldonado to a dominating 74-50 win. A pair of double-digit seeds were slated to face off into today's 9:45 a.m. quarterfinal tilt at The Pit in Albuquerque, with the 11th-seeded Bulldogs (18-10) taking on No....
Portales High's girls led as close to wire-to-wire as you can on Friday night. Junior guard Myleigh Banda knocked down a corner 3-pointer just five seconds in, and the Lady Rams never looked back in beating Hope Christian 69-38 in a Class 4A first-round state tournament game at the Ram Athletic Center. PHS (20-8), seeded fifth in the 16-team field, now faces fourth-seeded Gallup (22-8) in a 3 p.m. quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday at The Pit in Albuquerque. Junior forward...
TEXICO – Pecos may not be the same team that has been the most dominant in Class 2A boys basketball over the last decade, but the Panthers are still someone to be reckoned with. On Saturday, they rallied in the final quarter, shooting 10-for-10 from the free throw line in the stanza, to overtake top-seeded Texico 70-61 and claim the District 6-2A championship. Pecos has been in eight consecutive 2A finals, winning five of them – including four in a row from 2017 to 2020 and...
Portales High’s girls looked to be in deep trouble most of the way in Thursday’s District 4-4A tournament semifinal game against Lovington. Lady Wildcats junior guard Aubrey Aranda hit a 3-pointer on Lovington’s first possession, and they never relinquished the lead in a 50-46 victory over the Lady Rams at the Ram Athletic Center. Sophomore guard Malaiya Castro scored 12 points while Aranda and senior forward Erlin Salcido had 11 apiece. Lovington (17-12) traveled to top-seeded Artesia on Friday night in the finals and suffer...
It's been a season of "what ifs" for the Eastern New Mexico University women's basketball team. Fully half of the Greyhounds' 26 games have been decided by six points or less (6-7), and they've had their share of disappointments. On Saturday, though, they got one to bounce their way as junior forward Ishuana Hunter found senior guard/forward Deja Adrian for a back-door layup with 3.6 seconds left for a 56-54 Lone Star Conference win over Arkansas-Fort Smith at Greyhound...
Arkansas-Fort Smith may rank near the bottom of the Lone Star Conference men's basketball standings, but the Lions certainly didn't play like it on Saturday. Coming off a 109-106 loss on Thursday at Western New Mexico in triple overtime, UAFS stayed in contention for almost the entire game before Eastern New Mexico University finally nailed down a 92-85 victory at Greyhound Arena to clinch a berth in next week's LSC tournament at Frisco, Texas. Senior guard Greg Johnson...
