  • Hangar contract awarded

    Eric Butler

The government apparently is going under budget on this one. Big D Construction of Salt Lake City was awarded in late September a contract for the building of a 38,300 square foot, single story, single bay maintenance hangar at Cannon Air Force Base. Bids from 15 companies were received for the project but Big D’s winning proposal was at $10.8 million. When the Senate Appropriations Committee approved a bill authorizing the construction of the hangar, in July of 2008, $18 million was allotted — along with another $8 m...

Harp’s assault on Eastern New Mexico University school passing records will have to be put on hold for at least a week. Harp and three other Greyhounds have been suspended for what ENMU head coach Mark Ribaudo calls a “violation of team rules.” Harp is a sophomore quarterback from Argyle, Texas, who leads Division II with 463 passing yards per game. Sophomore quarterback J.J. He broke school records last weekend for career completions and single-season completions in a 34-24 loss to West Texas A&M. He set single-game schoo... Full story

  • Rec center offering activities for adults

    Eric Butler

Recreation centers have a funny way of being associated quite strongly with young people — and with good reason. It’s the youth who often seem starving for some kind of activity, or recreation, during the hours of the day when school isn’t in session and the parents aren’t at home. Lately, though, the Portales recreation center is making efforts to reach out to adults, too. The strategy is simple when it comes to marketing classes like yoga, belly dancing and toning: Make the cost extraordinarily cheap. For a blank... Full story

  • School board discusses attendance

    Eric Butler

Portales school administrators were keenly following district attendance numbers on Tuesday, which also happened to be the day for the school board meeting. The reason: The day marked the 40th of the current school year and it’s one of the benchmarks (along with the 80th and 120th) determining the amount of money the school system gets from the state. Superintendent Randy Fowler told board members the number increased from 2927 students to 2931 from morning to the end of the day. Besides the increase of four students in o...

  • Portales native killed in collision

    Eric Butler

Courtesy photo Ashleah Richards died in a car crash early Sunday morning, three miles south of Hale Center in the Plainview, Texas. Ashleah Richards liked to do things that stereotypically interest many girls — fix up hair, put on makeup and the like. But Richards was tough as nails, too, and that was evident in her playing days at Portales High School in the sports of volleyball, basketball and softball. Though standing only around 5 feet 5 inches tall at the most, Richards’ favorite spot on the basketball court, it se...

  • Teen summit encourages active lifestyle among youth

    Eric Butler

The Portales Teen Summit, with the theme of “Nothing To Do, Says Who,” may have suffered from the Columbus Day holiday just a little bit on Monday, but participants had positive comments. Only four participants signed up for the event at the Portales Recreation Center and, in fact, were dwarfed by the 15 people who showed up to volunteer their assistance. At the end, the day of activities was a rewarding one for the seventh and eighth graders who were present. Timothy Gonzales, 14, and his sister Auryana Gonzales, 12, eac...

  • Home invasion experience still haunts Portales resident

Vickers attackers are serving prison time, but memories of the attack still haunt her. It was late on a cold March 30, 2008, night and 82-year-old Jo Ann Vickers of Portales was already in bed when her doorbell rang. It was late on a cold March 30, 2008, night and 82-year-old Jo Ann Vickers of Portales was already in bed when her doorbell rang. Vickers got up, looked outside her front door, but didn’t see anything. She walked back to her bedroom. “I heard a noise that wasn’t normal,” she remembers. “So I got up and headed down the hallway when I met them. “It’s a pretty long hallway, so I couldn’t get out.” Vickers had just become a victim of a home invasion. “I tried to push back and shove back and fight back — and I don’t know wh... Full story

  • Landmarks languish in limbo

    Eric Butler

The excitement is almost tangible when some locals talk about rebuilding the oldest, grandest hotels in Clovis and Portales. But if hope puts gleam in the eyes, reality often provides the floaters. Still, those with the dream press on. “I’m not concerned,” said Robyne Beaubien, executive director of Clovis MainStreet, when asked about a delay transferring ownership of the Hotel Clovis between the city and Tierra Realty of Taos. “It’s my understanding that the developer they’re negotiating with is looking to do housing and...

  • Local schools address swine flue concerns

    Eric Butler

It’s flu season and the recent death of a Roosevelt County infant has raised concerns in Portales. But school and emergency management officials said Tuesday the number of students calling in sick from flu-like symptoms is about the usual experienced this time of year. Still, the amount of absences in the Portales school system at the beginning of the week was notable. Superintendent Randy Fowler said Portales Junior High, which has 433 students, had more than 140 absences on Tuesday. Around the same number were missing f... Full story

  • Highway proposals presented to council

    Eric Butler

State highway planners revealed options for improvements to U.S. Highway Tuesday at the Portales City Council meeting. Derek Meier of Wilson & Co. said his presentation was the next phase of the $6.75 million project. The highway splits into a pair of two-lane, one-way streets in Portales — First and Second streets. Meier showed three proposals to roadway reconstruction when the next phase of the project begins in 2011. One is essentially a refurbishing of the streets using the current design. The other two proposals...

  • Council to discuss funds for landscaping

    Eric Butler

Portales City Council members are expected to hear Tuesday how federal stimulus funds will be used to improve landscaping for medians on U.S. Highway 70. Improvements are part of a $247,000 award through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act intended for the Highway 70 medians and other landscape work around the Roosevelt County Courthouse. Other scheduled business before the councilors includes an update on the construction and renovation at YAM movie theater on Main Street, the annual report on Portales MainStreet and...

Adminstrators stress the hospital won't be giving H1N1 vaccinations and the flu shot will only be available through regular medical providers. Vaccine for the H1N1 flu virus is expected to begin arriving in New Mexico this week and this year there will be a twist for local medical providers. They will be among the first to get shots. Monday, The New Mexico Department of Health announced...

  • City painstakingly rebuilding Web site

    Eric Butler

Take a complicated Web site, one with a vast amount of content from several different departments, then write down the gist of each page on a corresponding 4x4-inch post-it note — and then stick them all on a huge poster board almost the size of a single wall. That can be the ultimate outcome when your Web site crashes, as city of Portales administrators have found out. It was back in early August when the site that serves the various functions of the city went down and, ever since, it’s been city employees that have b... Full story

  • ENMU grew from humble beginnings

    Eric Butler

It may have been a little slow going at first, but Eastern New Mexico University has evolved into the institution envisioned by its founders. That would be one providing higher education to the residents of the east side of state and, this weekend, many former ENMU students are taking in the campus one more time as the university celebrates homecoming. Eastern started as a one-building college in 1934 after five years of construction. That building in Portales still exists — now, it’s known as the administration b...

  • Local non-profit offers discrete substance abuse help

    Eric Butler

The stress of deployment overseas can come with a cost to individuals and their families — not only during the time the service member is gone, but before and after. One non-profit organization in Clovis, called Junctions, aims to help local residents who suffer from alcohol or substance abuse issues. Jackie Hoppe, co-owner of Junctions, said the function of her business is well-known enough that potential clients would prefer not being seen going in and out of the building on Main Street in Clovis. “Basically, what w...

  • Clovis believes graduation numbers correct

    Eric Butler

File photo Clovis HIgh's graduation rate of 78.8 percent compares favorably with the national average of 70 percent. The Clovis municipal school system isn’t joining a recent wave of criticism toward the New Mexico Public Education Department over the release of tentative 2008-09 graduate rates. With rates exceeding the national average, Clovis doesn’t have much of a reason. But other schools in eastern New Mexico have lower marks and aren’t happy about the preliminary numbers. The state’s Public Education Secretary, Veronic... Full story

  • Ceramics workshop includes displays, demonstrations

    Eric Butler

Sure, it was easy to admire the artists’ works on display during the past week at Eastern New Mexico University’s Runnels Gallery. Still, for most observers, the people who made the ceramics pieces were little more than names on placards. For many, those names came to life through workshops at ENMU on Friday and Saturday. Five of the artists with objects on display came to Portales to demonstrate various techniques in creating ceramic art. “I think it’s kinda fun. Just seeing the show, you get an idea of what’s out there. Bu...

  • Local experts offer opinions on health care reform

    Eric Butler

Local health care experts offered their take on health care reform Thursday and no one offered any easy or simple answers. Roosevelt General Hospital Administrator James D’Agostino, La Casa Health Center CEO Seferino Montano, ENMU Economics professor Michael Snipes and Chris Simons, an insurance executive from Artesia, offered their views on a myriad of proposals that have surfaced in Washington D.C. over the last few weeks. D’Agostino used a power-point presentation to illustrate what he believes are five current vie...
