In another step to bring Main Street from a one-way road to one capable of two-way traffic, the Portales City Council unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday during their meeting at City Hall. Tom Howell, interim city manager, said the New Mexico Department of Transportation office in Roswell requested the resolution. Howell said that office would be responsible for altering the existing stoplight at First Street and Main to accommodate the change to two-way traffic. Currently, Main Street has traffic in only one... Full story

Not too long ago, former Clovis High standout Jordan Garrett was mentally preparing herself for life after softball as her time at Volunteer State Community College in Tennessee was coming to a close. As officials at La Casa Family Health Center well know, some grants only begin to cover the expenses of a big project. Right now, though, La Casa is enjoying the news of a $766,880 award and just how far it’ll go toward a variety of improvements. Part of a $12.8 million grant through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) to New Mexico community health centers, La Casa’s portion has already been earmarked — but it’s not for any one single area. “We’ve got lots of plans. We were all excited. In all my years... Full story
Gene Hendrick, manager of the recently-formed Clovis Business Incubator, likes to use an analogy when trying to explain the name of his organization. “When I was growing up, everybody had an incubator because they’d raise their own chickens,” Hendrick said. “An incubator was something you used to bring the chickens along to a point where they didn’t need you anymore. And that’s exactly what a business incubator is.” Located at 105 E. Grand, the Clovis Business Incubator is a joint project of two larger tenants of the buildi... Full story

I can only remember falling for two April Fool’s jokes that were in print. One was Sports Illustrated’s hoax that an eccentric pitcher named Sidd Finch had learned how to throw a baseball 168 miles an hour and had been signed to the Mets. That was sort of understandable. The issue, though dated April 1, 1985, came to my house days before I had even got around to thinking about pranks and such. The other was a little more embarrassing for a student attending Eastern New Mexico University at the time. The year was either ‘83...

The New Mexico Department of Transportation schedules a regular inspection for the Prince Street bridge over the railroad tracks once every two years. In fact, the last one took place only last month with the overpass getting a status of “not deficient.” Some Clovis citizens aren’t so sure, however. Noting crumbling pieces of concrete in areas where north and south-bound ramps connect with the main deck, Clovis resident Chuck Glikas has concerns about the 20-year-old structure. “Where the joints come together, you’ll... Like almost every other part of the country, mid-1930s New Mexico was mired in the difficulties of the Great Depression. But it was a time of new beginnings, too, and Eastern New Mexico University will be celebrating its inception with a Founder’s Day Picnic on Sunday. Commemorating its 75th anniversary, ENMU officials will stage the picnic from noon to 3 p.m. outside the Administration Building on campus. The picnic meal will include two pieces of fried chicken, white bread, corn-on-the-cob, mustard-based potato salad, d...
In a perfect world, guys such as George Lees wouldn’t have to put in time on city government entities at 86 years of age. Lees’ world, indeed, wouldn’t have such things as a Keep Clovis Beautiful committee. “I resent, in a way, that we as a group have monthly Trek For Trashes. We award trophies for the groups that collect the most trash on a Saturday morning,” Lees said. “I was raised differently. If I didn’t pick up my clothes or do my chores, there was a consequence. “My mom and dad didn’t pick up after me, and here we a... Full story

Andrew Helton, the new men’s basketball coach at Eastern New Mexico University, has a far-reaching vision of Greyhound Arena filled with fans cheering on a winning ENMU program. District Judge Drew Tatum said Wednesday he would rule within two weeks on a summary judgement sought by the Village of Melrose against former police chief Michael Trammell. The judgement, if granted, would throw out a wrongful termination lawsuit filed by Trammell in July, 2008. Trammell resigned in October, 2006, amidst allegations he shot and killed seven dogs. In seeking dismissal of the suit, attorney Mary Torres said Trammell was an appointed officer for the village. Torres said...
Portales officials took a major look at the city’s past while ushering in the future. A council meeting Tuesday marked the first in which members used laptops instead of paper to look over the evening’s agenda. But after regular business items were tended to, the council reconvened outside for a flag-raising and a look back at the mayors of the city’s first 100 years of history. The scene was the Centennial Street Fair on Main Street. “It’s wonderful. Only every hundred years do you get to celebrate the 100th anniversa...
This year’s Juneteenth celebration won’t actually happen on June 19th in Clovis. But it’ll be close enough for organizers. In the early morning hours of June 20 — this Saturday — the cooking pits will be fired up as ribs, hot links, chicken, hamburgers, brisket and more make their way to the grill. If things go according to form, more than 3,000 people will make it out to Potter Park to take part. The event commemorates June 19, the date slaves in Texas received word of their emancipation in 1865. “It’s for every...
