PORTALES — The Greyhounds went 0-for-13 from the field in the first quarter of Saturday's Lone Star Conference women's basketball game against West Texas A&M — resulting in just one point in the period. In the end, Eastern New Mexico University finished 14-for-58, including just 1-for-22 from beyond the arc, in a 61-44 defeat. "Our effort was phenomenal today. You look at it, two different styles of teams — I understand. But, the other night (against UT-Permian Basin) we ha...
PORTALES — Texico's Nathan Phipps was just too much for the Portales Rams to handle in Saturday night's boys basketball showdown. The 6-foot-5 big man scored 25 points to lead his Wolverines to a 77-53 rout of the Rams. "He's solid all the way around. He's been playing since he was 5," Wolverines coach Ty Thatcher said of Phipps. "He doesn't look like he's as agile as he is, but his hands are really solid. Nathan's a great kid; he works hard and he uses his body well." T...
FLOYD — A season ago, coach Steve Foust’s Floyd Broncos boys basketball team advanced to the Class 1A quarterfinals. His Broncos managed to win 15 games overall, and accomplished a 7-4 record in a fierce district. Fast forward to 2017-18, and two keys leaders — Seth Chandler and Edgardo Chavez, are gone. Luckily for the Broncos, this year’s squad has a decent mix of all classes, including three seniors and another three juniors. “The kids have high expectations (for this year),” Foust explained. “We have really good leadersh...
PORTALES — A day late and a dollar short. That old adage may be a good way to describe Eastern New Mexico’s Lone Star Conference men’s basketball home opener Thursday night. The Greyhounds rallied to tie UT-Permian Basin at 57-all, only to allow a 15-2 run as the Falcons pulled away for a 84-74 victory. “It was 15-2?,” Greyhounds coach Tres Segler said after the game. “That’s pretty bad. That’s what happens, you know what I mean? Coach Andy (Newman) really likes (Garrett Baggett), he’s been really high on him. I know he ha...
PORTALES — The UT-Permian Basin Falcons played spoilers to what was supposed to be a special night for the Greyhounds' women's basketball team. The Falcons built a double-digit lead, early in the game, and managed to hold-off a late ENMU charge to take the 68-63 Lone Star Conference-opening victory. "We just tried to get the ball in the middle of the zone, and attack it from there," Eastern coach Josh Prock said of his team's late rally. "The bottomline is, you can't get d...
DORA — Building a program as a first-year coach can be tough, but luckily for veteran coach John Wootton, he’ll be inheriting a Dora Coyotes team that won 20 games a season ago. The former 12-year coach of Fort Sumner — along with stops at Maxwell, Tatum, San Jon and Santa Rosa — is looking to put his philosophies in place and in the process, he hopes it leads to more winning. “We’re hoping to push the ball,” Wootton explained. “We got some kids that like to run. Defensively, we want to give people something to look at, and w...
PORTALES — When a team goes from a state semifinal appearance one year, to a state title game appearance the next, the next logical step is to win it all, right? For the Portales boys basketball team, that's exactly what head coach Rickie McBroom believes his Rams can accomplish in 2017-18. The defending 4A state runner-up Rams return seven seniors and roughly seven total lettermen for '17-18, with dreams of an NMAA championship trophy dancing in their heads. "If you look at o...
PORTALES — The Rams avoided a late Muleshoe rally in their girls basketball season opener Tuesday night, and came out with a 48-43 victory at the Ram Athletic Center. Portales (1-0) led by as many as 14 at one point in the fourth quarter, only to see Muleshoe pull within three in the final two minutes. The Rams, however, managed to hold off the late surge. “It looked like a first game for us,” Rams coach Wade Fraze said. “We saw spurts where things worked like they should, we looked pretty decent. And then, we saw spurts...
PORTALES — The 2016-17 Portales girls basketball team was supposed to be in a rebuild, after losing several seniors from the year before — and returning little experience — in the process. But somehow, the Rams managed to make a run to the 4A state semifinal. And now as the 2017-18 season tips off, they return much more firepower. In fact, according to head coach Wade Fraze, his 2016-17 team returned just one starter, point guard Zamorye Cox, and little else. “Really, we fielded a majority JV team from the previous year,...
LAS VEGAS, N.M. — The Robertson High Cardinals pulled out all the stops Saturday to net a 20-14 Class 4A semifinal win over Portales. The Cardinals, playing Portales for the first time since losing last year's 4A title game 43-14, had a goal line stand to prevent a Rams go-ahead score with less than nine minutes remaining, then recorded a first down on a fake punt late that put them in the victory formation and into their third-straight 4A title game. "We just came up a little...
PORTALES — A year ago, the Portales High Rams took down the Robertson Cardinals, 43-14, to capture the New Mexico 4A state crown. This year, if the Rams (10-1) want to get back to the 4A title game, they'll have to go through Robertson (10-1) in the state semifinal, this Saturday at 1:30 p.m. Unlike last year, however, Portales will have to make the three-hour trek to Las Vegas to square-off with the Cardinals. For Rams sophomore defensive end/offensive tackle Philip Blidi, h...

The three schools — Muleshoe, Farwell and Bovina, will all compete in tonight’s “Area” playoff round. However, they’re all likely to be underdogs, as their three opponents sport a combined 26-7 record — including two at 10-1 apiece. PORTALES — The postseason is certainly the best time to be playing your best football of the year, and the defending 4A state champion Portales Rams are proving just that. The Rams drubbed the Taos Tigers in Friday's 4A quarterfinal, 41-11, to advance to next week's semifinal. For Portales (10-1) it was all about big plays on both sides of the football. The Rams had three first-quarter touchdowns that all covered at least 35 yards in length, while the Ram defense forced f...
MELROSE — The NMAA state football playoffs are in full-swing, as three area teams — Melrose, Portales and Clovis, will look to extend their seasons by another week. Melrose is seeking a fourth-consecutive Eight-Man state title, and the ninth overall state crown under long-time Buffaloes coach Dickie Roybal. Melrose (9-0) is the No. 1 seed in the Eight-Man division, and is coming off a 58-0 quarterfinal rout of No. 8 Cloudcroft. What’s more impressive about the win is that the Buffaloes hadn’t played a game in nearly a month...

PORTALES — The Eastern New Mexico Greyhound volleyball team has overcome the obvious growing pains of youth and inexperience during its 2017 campaign to qualify for this year’s Lone Star Conference Tournament. The No. 8 Greyhounds (12-18, 9-11 LSC) will face host team and No. 1-seed Tarleton State tonight at 7:30, in the first round of the LSC’s single-elimination tournament. RIO RANCHO — For the fourth year in a row — and eighth time under head coach Kristen Scanlan, the Texico Wolverines are state champions. Texico won yet another 3A state volleyball title at the 2017 NMAA State Volleyball Championships on Saturday afternoon, needing just three sets to take care of Santa Rosa — 25-18, 25-16, 25-19. "It's the girls that got that win and we (as coaches) kinda come along for the ride," Scanlan said. "It's a blessing to be with such great young women...
RIO RANCHO — To be the best, you have to beat the best. On Saturday night, the Melrose Buffaloes proved that old adage to be true, knocking off a Goliath of sorts in Elida, for the Class 1A state volleyball crown. For Melrose, it's the sixth state title in school history, as it pulled the narrowest sweep in the history of narrow sweeps, 25-23, 26-24, 26-24. "The girls came in refusing to lose today. We knew all year that were just as good as that team, and we just couldn't g...
ALBUQUERQUE - The Clovis Wildcats proved in Friday's first-round contest that it's not about winning style points in November, but just winning. The No. 9 'Cats halted No. 8 Atrisco Heritage Academy's triple option rushing attack, holding the Jaguars to just 143 rushing yards in a 26-8 victory. "We talked about it all week, we knew they had a great running game. Their triple option is really hard to stop, and we hadn't seen it probably since the last time we played these guys...
PORTALES — Three area teams embark on the NMAA postseason tonight, as Dora will look to get revenge on Tatum, following a first-round blowout victory over Pine Hill. Melrose, meanwhile, will also play in an 8-Man quarterfinal game tonight, as it seeks its 12th state title. Texico, on the other hand, travels to Dexter for 3A quarterfinal action. As for nearby Texas schools, the regular season is coming to a close, as they look to do some fine-tuning ahead of the playoffs. Bovina already clinched a district title last week, a...
PORTALES - The Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds could be on the verge of having history happen on Saturday night, and not just because they have a chance to qualify for the NCAA Division II playoffs for the first time in school history. Should Eastern (8-1, 6-1) beat No. 4 Midwestern State (8-0, 7-0), and in turn, win the Lone Star Conference title, there's no doubt running back Kamal Cass will play a big part of it. Cass could potentially make some history himself on Saturday,...
PORTALES — The 2016-17 Eastern New Mexico women’s basketball team made school history, and fifth-year head coach Josh Prock anticipates even more history can be made by his ballclub in 2017-18. The Greyhounds made their first NCAA Tournament appearance last year, and return 10 letterwinners this season. “Last year was a tremendous accomplishment for our team and our program. I’m proud of all the kids, but last year wasn’t just these kids — it’s also many kids that have played here before with me, and laid the groundwork an...
ELIDA — Very few high school athletes can claim that they've won a state title in any sport, but for two Elida High School seniors, winning is all they've ever known. Elida seniors Lacy Ferguson and Kasyn Creighton already have seven titles apiece — three in volleyball, three in basketball and one in track. With this weekend's state volleyball championships on the horizon, the opportunity to add an eighth title — and go a perfect 4-for-4 in their high school volleyball caree...
PORTALES — The Moriarty Pintos proved that the "third time is the charm," winning Saturday's 4A District 4 volleyball tournament championship game against Portales. The Pintos, who lost both of their regular season matches with the Rams, took Portales down in four sets, 19-25, 25-17, 25-18 and 25-22, to win their second-consecutive district tournament title. "I think we just started a little tight, a little nervous and a little anxious," Moriarty coach Kim Bell said of the f...
