  • Don't expect policy changes from Obama

    Freedom New Mexico

When President Barack Obama promised this week to open 75 percent of potential offshore gas and oil resources to drilling and praised the controversial fracking method for extracting untapped oil reserves on land, a collective shudder went through his green constituency. Welcome to election-year rhetoric. The green lobby is learning what other loyal Democratic Party constituencies have learned about being taken for granted. Like blacks and union members before them, the green lobby is discovering that, despite promises to...

  • Obama wasting time on possible job creation

    Freedom New Mexico

By denying a permit for the Keystone XL pipeline last week, President Barack Obama may succeed in delaying until after November's election the politically difficult decision of which loyal constituency to offend, big labor or environmental activists. What is more certain is that the political maneuvering to deny a permit for the controversial 1,600-mile pipeline from Canadian wells to Texas refineries has an immediate, deleterious effect: It costs America thousands of jobs. The president's decision is contrary to consumer...

    Freedom New Mexico

CANYON, Texas — The road and slow starts continue to plague the Eastern New Mexico University men's basketball team. Reggie Nelson scored a game-high 25 points for the Greyhounds (10-8, 3-6 LSC), who fell to 1-6 on the road this season. Devone Davis added 12 points for ENMU. Donald Sims had 19 points and 11 re...

  • High praise for Supreme Court ruling

    Freedom New Mexico

The Supreme Court last week delivered a resounding victory for religious freedom, made all the more impressive by its unanimity. In a 9-0 decision, the court ruled that government cannot dictate to religious institutions whom they can hire or fire for leadership positions. That represented a convincing rejection of the Obama administration's position, which was that churches should be treated no differently under federal and state employment discrimination law than secular employers. Such laws ban discrimination in employment... Full story

  • Data on higher education needs to be published

    Freedom New Mexico

One potential benefit of a tight budget is the opportunity to assess priorities and goals. That's true for a family or a business. And it's especially true for a government, which, by definition, depends on taxes taken from people. This month California's nonpartisan Legislative Analyst's Office issued a report, "Improving Higher Education Oversight," that examined the state's university systems. The main finding: There isn't enough "pertinent data" to gauge the performance of the state schools. The LAO report said that last...

  • Time for some GOP candidates to call it a day

    Freedom New Mexico

The TV networks declared Mitt Romney the winner in New Hampshire about five seconds after the polls closed, so commentators had to scramble to find something interesting to say the rest of the night. It wasn't easy. Mr. Romney had been expected to win Tuesday's GOP primary and did. Jon Huntsman tried for an upset that didn't happen. Rick Santorum's post-Iowa sizzle fizzled. And then there was Ron Paul. The libertarian congressman from Texas came in second, then delivered a rousing speech to wildly enthusiastic supporters. If...

  • Romney has best policies on conflict

    Freedom New Mexico

The Republican debates Saturday night and Sunday morning were intended to give last-minute guidance to voters in New Hampshire, which holds its presidential primary today. But they were useful also to voters in military-rich eastern New Mexico. The candidates offered glimpses into how they view the armed forces, overseas conflicts and when and how the United States should go to war. Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry and Rick Santorum favored a more or less endless war against global terrorism. As in previous debates, they sounded rea...

  • Our debt will only burden our children

    Freedom New Mexico

It's staggering. The federal debt, currently calculated at $15.2 trillion, actually is $51 trillion. The more familiar debt figure of $15.2 trillion debt is bad enough. It's increasing at about $1.3 trillion a year and comes from deficit spending the past 10 years on the federal budget, whose fiscal year begins each Oct. 1. And the current debt limit soon will again need to be raised so that the borrowing can continue. But that number doesn't include future payments for Social Security, Medicare, federal employees'... Full story
