  • Blame inflation for rising oil, gas prices

    Freedom New Mexico

Those who cannot remember the 1970s are condemned to repeat them. Even if you're too young to remember the Disco Decade, you've doubtless seen pictures of cars lined up waiting to pump scarce gas at filling stations. We'd suffer that again if Rep. Dennis Kucinich, D-Ohio, and five colleagues get their way. They've introduced HR3784, the Gas Price Spike Act. It would, in the bill's language, "impose a windfall profit tax on oil and natural gas (and refined products) and to allow an income tax credit for purchases of...

Defending regular-season champion Incarnate Word was selected to repeat in baseball, earning 13 of 22 first-place votes and finishing with 157 points to 126 for Tarle...

  • Get dressed on your own time, officers

    Freedom New Mexico

Taxpayers, reform advocates and those concerned with responsible government budgeting and reining in the power of public employee unions claimed a small victory this month when the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal of a lawsuit against the city of San Diego by its police officers, seeking back pay and overtime for tasks including putting on their uniforms before coming to work. The nation's highest court sent a message to police unions: Get dressed on your own time, like the rest of us. The court's Jan. 9 decision... Full story

  • Proposed bills pose danger to free speech

    Freedom New Mexico

If you went to the English-language version of the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia on Wednesday, you would have seen only a message warning about attempts in Congress to censor the Internet. Reddit (a social news site), Boing Boing (a popular group blog) and other websites joined the one-day "blackout." The protest is aimed at two bills pending in Congress: the Stop Online Piracy Act, by Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas; and the Protect IP Act, by Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt. SOPA and PIPA are aimed at halting the piracy of... Full story

Iowa's first-in-the-nation voting did what it was supposed to do for the Republican presidential primary: narrow the field and create front-runners for the nomination. What the Iowa Caucuses also illustrated is that Mitt Romney, who finished first by eight votes over Santorum, has yet to break through and establish a wider base of GOP...
