Local columnist Today is El Diez y Seis de Septiembre. Sept. 16. Mexican Independence Day. It makes me think of how, in many ways, the U.S. depends on Mexican immigrants and yet, in many ways, wants to be independent of them. It also makes me think about how many Mexican immigrants depend on the U.S. for some things and yet, in some ways, want to live independent here, with a separate set of rules and cultures. On this Sept. 16, I am thinking about the extremes of Donald Trump and Jorge Ramos, and somewhere in between are the...

Me hace pensar cómo, en muchos sentidos, de que los Estados Unidos depende en los inmigrantes mexicanos y sin embargo, en muchos sentidos, quiere ser dependiente de ellos. I use to worry that I didn’t worry enough. I had a mini crisis a couple of weeks ago. Things were going rather smooth and so I knew a crisis was around the corner. It caught me unexpected. I expected that. It’s either a sign of maturity or insanity — take your pick — when things that are supposed to shake your whole world just give you a little jolt. Flash back 20 years and it was the little jolts that seemed to shake up my world. These days it seems to be the little avoidab... Full story

Mom saw the spilled nail polish on our bedroom carpet and almost broke into tears. link Helena Rodriguez “Helen!” she screamed. This was only the beginning. I was a little goat, she said. Next, she spotted the gooey chocolate syrup on our play dish cabinet. This isn’t the best nor is it the worst description of my bedroom when I was growing up. I shared my bedroom with my sisters, Becky and Julie (Yolanda and Crisanta came later). We were messy but happy kids, but it was a cho...

Local columnist There is a time and a season for everything. Soon the leaves will start to blush into hues of orange and red, perhaps wiping away tears that froze into the icicles of winter and then misted the flowers of spring and summer. Will autumn bring more dew to moisten eyes that have already been well-watered? Just as there is a time for each new season, there is also a time to live and to die, a time to be happy and be sad, and a time to celebrate new beginnings. And, as I have seen this past year, there is also a...
Today we have crisp and high-quality digital sound at our finger and ear tips. But nothing beats the old-fashioned needle-to-the-vinyl sounds of my youth, whether I was jamming to the hardcore piano of Billy Joel or hip-swaying cumbias of Grupo Mazz. My friend, Lupe Rosales, got me thinking about my first vinyls recently. Some of you may be too young for vinyls. Vinyls were the personal-pan-pizza-sized disc records that came before cassette tapes and then the CDs or iPods that you know and use today. I remember the first... Full story

Local columnist Last week, I wrote about the old North Main Grocery store in Portales. Like Portales, many Small Town Americas had many mom and pop stores. They were a lot like today’s convenience stores, but with several major differences. These mom and pops supplied. Unlike today’s ready-to-eat meals toasting under hot lamps at your 24-hour convenience corners, mom and pops catered to the cook, selling flour, potatoes, freshly cut meat and other cooking supplies. They also catered to the sweet tooths, as I mentioned whe...

When I wrote about paper dolls a few weeks ago, this memory took me back to a place I haven’t visited — not even in my mind — in decades. It took me to the old North Main Grocery in Portales. link Helena Rodriguez Some of you children of the 1940s, ’50s, ’60s and ’70s may remember this small mom and pop — and Winnie dog, as some reminded me — store that was located in north Portales about a block up from the current Allsup’s, going toward the Bethel Highway. North Main Grocery...

link Helena Rodriguez Everyone knows by now that Donald Trump has upset many Hispanics/Latinos, the Spanish-language media and others who do business with him due to his derogatory remarks toward immigrants when he announced his candidacy for president. Regarding immigrants, he said they “bring drugs and crime (to the U.S.) and are rapists.” For good measure, he added, “And some are good.”
