The majority of districts saw an increase less than 1 percent, while non-residential properties outside the Clovis city limits actually saw a 0.145 percent decrease...

Makayla left Ogden, Utah, on Saturday with two trophies, $250 and some bragging rights after winning first place in the amateur women’s surf category during the World Wake Surfing Championship held last weekend. That was the message during the annual Sept. 11 ceremony held outside James Polk Stone Community Bank on Tuesday morning as dozens came out to honor the thousands who lost their lives and millions more who were affected by the 9/11 terrorist attacks. "We can't ever forget watching TV as we watched that second plane fly into the Twin Towers. When we say the towers crumble, we can never forget that and today we especially... Full story

Standefer said the price estimate for the facility was around $8 million, which he said was more than the city was expecting. He said the next step would be t...

  • Shooting prowess on display at contest

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Sep 8, 2018

PORTALES — Dozens of competitors took to Idsinga Dairy on Saturday to take part in Roosevelt General Hospital's fourth annual target shooting fundraiser. While promoters called it a skeet shoot, if you want to get technical, it was more like a sporting clay competition, said Joe Whitehurst, shooting director of the gathering. Either way, the basic goal is the same — shoot a clay target out of the air. The National Rifle Association tell us a skeet shoot is all about "cr...

  • Reporter's notebook: Grandstand on the move

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Sep 8, 2018

CLOVIS — When three different groups submitted applications last month to bring a racetrack and casino to Clovis, many of the details of the projects were similar: hundreds of jobs, millions of dollars of revenue for the state and a location on the east side of town. One element that was not consistent throughout the three proposals was how spectators would watch the races, should the state's Racing Commission select their bid for the sixth gaming license. The application f...

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Sep 7, 2018

Those venturing into Hillcrest Park today will get a two-for-one as both the fourth annual Rotary Arts in the Park event (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and the Desert Cruzers 22nd annual car show (8 a.m. to 4 p.m.) are set to take place there. An economist from the state Economic Development Board visited the region on Thursday to get the word out about a new program that can provide capital gains tax benefits for investments in certain designated areas called opportunity zones. Economist Ryan Eustice said opportunity zones were a last-minute addition to the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017 to ensure bipartisan support to get the bill passed. And it will be bringing its plane to Clovis for the first time on Monday. Jamie Cushman|Updated Sep 2, 2018

With the nation set to celebrate Labor Day on Monday, The News asked for residents’ worst workplace experiences. Two stood out: • As he loaded up a fishing hook with bait at Greene Acres Park on Saturday, Gabriel Mundine recalled the three years he spent in Iraq deployed with the U.S. Army. “I went over there trying to win the hearts and minds and bring democracy I guess over there and they basically told me to shovel it, ‘We don’t want it,’” Mundine said. While it was a tough three years that included being hit by an imp...

  • Rain causes things to get 'crazy'

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Sep 1, 2018

A storm that reminded one resident of a classic 1939 film quickly swept through eastern New Mexico on Saturday. It left large puddles, blown over trees and some soggy shoes in its wake. The third annual sidewalk sale in Clovis had been scheduled to run until 5 p.m. but was cut short by the rain and a large amount of sand being blown around by high winds. "Everything was wonderful until about 3 (when) it blew in," organizer Shane Grah said. "It was almost an immediate change....

But the messages are rock solid. Literally. The uplifting messages are painted on rocks located outside Clovis-Carver Public Library. Clovis Civic Center General Manager Misty Bertrand said the #Clovisrocks campaign started prior to last August's deadly library shooting, after which the rocks... Full story
