Have you ever considered this statement? God is greater than any event. I heard a true story last week that illustrates this concept well. Maria (not her real name) was born in 1938, in the "Little Italy" borough of Queens, N.Y. Her father was a Sicilian immigrant, and her mother was an Italian immigrant. The family had a strong faith and Maria from her childhood knew that their existence and very breath depended upon God. Maria's parents doted on their little girl knowing she would be the only child they were to have. Her...
What does it mean to serve the Lord with joy? I just read a book by W.P. Livingston titled, "Mary Slessor of Calabar." Livingston traces Mary Slessor's experiences in the harshest of conditions in the 18th century in Africa, yet she served the Lord with joy even in her difficult circumstances. Her early childhood was wrought with alcoholism in the home since she had a drunkard for a father. Her mother was a godly woman and her mother's forbearance under difficult circumstances, her prayers and devotional life saved the...
Think about this: Sometimes our mistakes can turn out to be blessings. That concept is best illustrated in with the story of Ivory soap. As a child, I loved Ivory soap. I was so amazed that it floated in the water when I took a bath. Then I would see the commercial on television — "Ivory Soap: The soap that floats!" The Ivory soap commercial was a 50s classic. It showed an old time four-legged bathtub with two little children taking a bath with Ivory soap. The mother said, "I buy Ivory because I always know where the soap i...
This is graduation time and many of us ask as we look at our graduating children and grandchildren, "Where have the days gone?" Many of the minutes we have spent with our children and grandchildren have added up to hours, hours to days, days to weeks, and weeks to months and then the years really do seem to fly by. Looking back over my life, I see that months have added up to years, and years to decades. I have been to two graduations this week — one for our fifth-grade granddaughter and one for our eighth-grade g...
This past week I was reading about God's mercy. Paul wrote that God was rich in mercy. (Ephesians 2:3-5). The definition of mercy related to how God views us is not getting what one deserves. It means withholding of one's punishment. If you are like me, I have many times deserved punishment. Thoughts, acts, deeds, schemes, plans to get back at someone ... even if I have not acted on them, those thoughts have sure have consumed me at times. Just dwelling on those things has drained my mind and the result is I have not...
Editor's note: The following column is being rerun at reader request. I wrote at the beginning of last year about 30 things I have learned. I have had several requests from readers to run this article again. A few years back a friend sent me an e-mail with an entire litany of statements titled "18 things I have learned." She said she received the email from someone else who also received it from someone else. Usually by the time the e-mails make it around the globe, the author's name is unknown. Such was the email that I... Full story
Virginia was a telephone switchboard operator in the mountains of North Carolina. It was the depression era, and times were hard. Virginia loved to visit with her neighbors as she was connecting their calls over her massive telephone switchboard. She could tell anyone who was sick, who was visiting from out of town, who had just had a baby and other not so innocent information about her neighbors. If one wanted the latest on anyone, people would talk to Virginia. Her job was essential during those difficult depression years....
