  • Court documents: Former golf course operator's bank account cleaned out

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Sep 16, 2019

CLOVIS — The city of Clovis was granted a restraining order Monday to freeze the bank accounts of its former golf course operator, claiming Charlie Maciel did not inform them of debt owed on merchandise it purchased from him. Court documents, however, indicate the action may have come too late. Following the granting of a restraining order to freeze any account at JP Stone Community Bank bearing the name of Maciel or his Real Golf limited liability corporation, an affidavit was filed by City Attorney Jared Morris i...

  • Goddard proves too much for Portales

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Sep 14, 2019

PORTALES — If there were any questions to be answered about the Goddard Rockets, the second-ranked team in Class 5A answered them Friday night at Greyhound Stadium. Well, maybe one question remained after the 44-12 victory over Class 4A’s top-ranked Portales Rams — why, exactly, are they No. 2? That’s a question that will play out later in the season, when the Rockets take on No. 4 Los Lunas later this month, No. 4 Artesia in late October and No. 1 Roswell Nov. 1 to close o...

  • ENMU men's soccer hopes high

    Kevin Wilson - Staff Writer|Updated Sep 10, 2019

PORTALES — At the rate it was going Sunday, Eastern New Mexico’s men’s soccer team would soon have worry about being the nationally-ranked team trying to avoid an upset and not the team trying to score the upset. That’s now reality. The Greyhounds, fresh off two wins over ranked opponents, Lund themselves No. 17 in the latest United States Soccer Coaches Association poll. They blanked No. 3 Fort Hays State Sunday at Greyhound Stadium. Goals from Joaquin Borruel and Gabriel...

  • Water authority hoping to accelerate federal cooperation

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Sep 10, 2019

CLOVIS — The Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority is hoping it can knock out a big chunk of its long-discussed water project in the next few years, provided it can throw down an upfront financial gauntlet. David Lansford, chair for both the authority and the city’s water policy advisory committee, detailed the authority’s thoughts during the committee’s regular meeting Tuesday at Clovis City Hall. The project, most recently estimated at $527.4 million, has two components. The authority is first working on an interim...

  • Officials discuss little-known license law

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Sep 10, 2019

CLOVIS — If a law passes in the New Mexico Legislature and nobody knows it’s a law six years later, does it make an impact? Shannon LeBlanc offered evidence results vary when the Legislature’s military and veterans’ affairs committee met Monday in Clovis. Committee members were asked about creating legislation that would allow occupational licenses from another state to be accepted in New Mexico for military spouses. James Burns, chair of Clovis’ Committee of Fifty, said military spouses were having issues finding work when...

  • Officials discuss marijuana response

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Sep 7, 2019

CLOVIS — Recreational marijuana will be a reality in New Mexico, Clovis Mayor David Lansford said. The only variable for Clovis is how the city chooses to deal with it. Lansford addressed the Clovis City Commission at the conclusion of its Thursday meeting with news that Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has placed recreational marijuana legalization on the agenda for the 2020 legislative session. The 30-day session can only deal with budgetary issues unless the governor’s office makes a special exception. With Democrats hol...

  • ENMU officials hope for liquor license by end of October

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Sep 7, 2019

PORTALES — If all goes according to plan, Eastern New Mexico University hopes to have a liquor license for its Portales campus granted by the end of October. That was the timeline shared by Jeff Elwell, ENMU system chancellor and Portales campus president, as the university’s board of regents work session Saturday morning at the college’s administration building. With the meeting designated as a work session, no actions were taken during the hour of open meeting, or following the 75-minute executive session to discuss propert...

  • Taking more care with 'close enough'

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Sep 7, 2019

A few years ago, I was at a gathering that wasn’t really a potluck, but had a lot of friends and a lot of homemade food. Close enough, right? My friend’s sister brought the family’s traditional jalapeño poppers. These weren’t the first time I’d had the snacks, as I’d spent longer than 30 minutes in New Mexico, but they were easily the best I’d had. “What do you think of the poppers, Kevin? I saw you went back for seconds.” I said they were great, but I was thinking, “These poppers make me want to break up your sister’s rel...

  • Clovis approves food festival, beer garden

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Sep 7, 2019

CLOVIS — The third weekend of October will see more than a dozen food trucks crowd into Hillcrest Park for what organizers hope will include celebration, networking and, of course, eating. Thanks to the Clovis City Commission’s approval, there will also be a beer garden. Via a 5-1 vote, the commission allowed a variance for the Oct. 19 575 Foodie Fest that means Red Door can sell its beer in a fenced area of the park. The company first established itself in the Mainline Bowl building in March, and has since purchased the Lev...

  • ENMU exits NCAA probation

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Sep 7, 2019

PORTALES — While university officials insist much went on at the administrative levels, an average fan of Eastern New Mexico University didn’t see much impact while the college spent four years in NCAA probation. And now it’s over. The university received word last week that it has satisfactorily completed the probation period that started Sept. 1, 2015. "We are extremely pleased to hear about the NCAA's recent decision," Interim Athletic Director Jeff Long said in a school release. "It has been a total team effort as we ha...

  • Man pleads to disorderly conduct

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Sep 7, 2019

CLOVIS — A Clovis man is hoping a Thanksgiving weekend mistake will soon be behind him. Jeffery Cole, 60, pleaded no contest Thursday to a charge of disorderly conduct, stemming from an accusation he exposed himself to a store clerk Nov. 22 at North Plains Mall. According to terms of the plea reached in Clovis Magistrate Court, Cole receives 182 days of supervised probation, a suspended sentence of 180 days in jail and $73 in court fines. Magistrate Judge Janemarie Vander Dussen also stipulated Cole undergo 10 or more c...

  • Ten candidates on list for CCC president position

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Sep 7, 2019

CLOVIS — Ten candidates are in the running to be the next president at Clovis Community College. A week from now, the finalist field will likely be half that size. That was the crux of the update given Wednesday by Raymond Mondragon, secretary of the CCC Board of Trustees, at its monthly meeting at the college. Officials said 62 candidates applied for the position, which became vacant in July when Becky Rowley left to become president at Santa Fe Community College. Mondragon said the Association of Community College Trustees,...

  • Rams home at last

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Sep 3, 2019

PORTALES — If history’s any indication, the Portales Rams will have their fourth 3-0 start in their last five seasons. While the history is strongly in Portales’ favor when it comes to West Las Vegas — 21 wins in 22 tries, the lone mark a game the Rams won and forfeited later for using an ineligible player — none of it’s really coming to Greyhound Stadium on Friday. Or, as succinctly put by Portales coach Jaime Ramirez, “Last year’s last year.” The Rams, 36-0 winners over...

  • Crockett pro career continues in Lebanon

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Sep 3, 2019

CLOVIS — Basketball has taken Jaye Crockett from Clovis, to Lubbock, to pretty much the rest of the world. He hopes it will let him for another 10 years. The 2010 Clovis High and 2014 Texas Tech graduate is on his sixth season of professional hoops overseas. This year takes him to Lebanon. Crockett, the No. 2 scorer in Clovis history, spoke with The News before leaving Clovis for the season. Where are you playing this season? Anibal Zahle. (Zahle is) the city, that’s the team name we go by. It’s part of First League in Leban...

  • Clovis board makes school trip policy change

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Aug 31, 2019

CLOVIS — The Clovis Municipal Schools Board of Education approved an out-of-state trip that conflicted with district policy, and soon after changed the policy that created that conflict. By a 4-0 vote Tuesday, the board altered its school-sponsored travel policy to say, “no group sponsored by the School District and with a school employee on duty will take a trip of more than 600 miles, one way, unless an exception is granted by the Superintendent. Exceptions can be granted when status of an organization is dependent on nat...

  • Recording artists reuniting

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Aug 31, 2019

CLOVIS — They’re getting the bands back together, at the place where the music all started — and for some of them, the place where it ended. Recording artists of all stripes are scheduled to descend upon Clovis this coming weekend, as Saturday marks what will be the first Norman Petty Studios Alumni Reunion. Around four dozen artists with some ties to Clovis’ Norman Petty Studio and their families are expected to come to the event, which features a 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday meet-and-greet with a $6 admission charge. • New owner sought for old stadium

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Aug 30, 2019

PORTALES - Stadium for sale. Inquire within. Eastern New Mexico University is seeking a new owner for its former Greyhound Stadium, one of its oldest and most far-flung assets, as it enters its fourth year of dormancy. Jeff Elwell, chancellor of the ENMU system and president of the Portales campus, said counsel is working on "for sale" advertisements in September. The price? That's up to you, potential buyer. "It's a bid process," Elwell said. "We don't ask." The former...

  • Injuries, inexperience to test Wildcats early

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Aug 27, 2019

CLOVIS — As currently formulated, nobody’s expecting either Clovis cross country team to come away with first place at Friday’s Clovis Invitational. But district and state championships aren’t won in August, and for right now just getting the rosters filled out is the early goal for each Wildcat squad. The boys, coming off of last year’s state runnerup finish — the highest in Wildcat program history — expect to make some noise at Friday’s 3:30 p.m. race at Ned Houk Park. But u...

  • Earliest forecast for new senior center 2021

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Aug 27, 2019

CLOVIS - The earliest the city will start breaking ground on a new senior center looks to be 2021. That estimate is assuming it jumps through every procedural hoop to get on the state's general obligation bond project list for the 2020 election and that voters give the go-ahead. Still, its senior center task force spent an hour Monday morning picking out materials for its vision at Hillcrest Park during a plan and design meeting at Clovis City Hall. Four members of the...

  • Residents raise concerns about traffic near Highland

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Aug 26, 2019

CLOVIS — The school year is off to a fast and furious start — a little too fast and furious for residents near the new Highland Elementary campus. The president of the Sandia neighborhood watch group addressed Clovis’ public works committee Wednesday morning hoping for some type of relief. Valerie Landrith, speaking on behalf of the group that meets monthly, said traffic frequently goes through the 100 to 300 blocks of Sandia instead of making its way through the traffic light at Manana and Thornton. “We are the bypass,” Land...

  • ENMU partners with Under Armour

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Aug 24, 2019

PORTALES — Get ready for new green and silver gear, all with the interlocking U’s and A’s. For the next four years, Eastern New Mexico University is an Under Armour school. The deal was announced by the university via release Wednesday, and the university provided the four-page contract Thursday morning after a request from The News. "ENMU and Eastern Athletics are very excited to partner with Under Armour," Interim Athletic Director Jeff Long said in the release. "Our agreement will provide our teams with quality unifo...

  • Having is good, making is better

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Aug 24, 2019

Danny Leroux isn’t a motivational speaker by any means. He’s a journalist who writes and talks about basketball a lot, and that’s why I read his stories and listen to his podcasts. He’s not your typical NBA writer, though. He’s more the quirky guy who pays just as much attention to your favorite team’s salary cap as he does to who’s starting games. I’ve always been interested in that stuff, which is why my gym time usually features the RealGM Radio and the Dunc’d On podcasts he co-hosts. Whenever he signs off, he goes with...

  • Clovis commission approves pay bump

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Aug 24, 2019

CLOVIS — Starting today, many of Clovis’ 350-plus employees wlll earn a little more money for the jobs they do, as the City Commission approved a 2.5% pay increase during its meeting Thursday night. The move will cost the city $502,802 over the year, with the salary increases not affecting City Manager Justin Howalt or Clovis Police Department officers. Howalt negotiates his contract with the commission, while the CPD collectively bargains and had its own 2.5% increase approved Aug. 8. Howalt said some library clerks and sea...

  • Officials approve variance on Main

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Aug 24, 2019

CLOVIS - In what has become a common scene over the last few months, a back-and-forth brewed between private investors wanting to add an outdoor taproom on Main Street, and members of nearby churches who wished and prayed the city commission wouldn't allow it. The result was familiar, too, with the commission approving the necessary variance - save Commissioner Gary Elliott's dissenting vote. Following a half-hour discussion on the damage alcohol causes versus allowing...

  • Clovis to consider employee raises

    Kevin Wilson - Staff|Updated Aug 23, 2019

CLOVIS — Shortly after final budget approval, the city of Clovis generally looks at employee raises. The 2019-20 fiscal year is no exception, as the Clovis City Commission will consider a half-million dollars worth of raises during its Thursday evening meeting. If approved by the commission, most of the city’s 300-plus employees would see a 2.5% increase, effective Sunday. The $502,602 to cover the increases would largely come from the city’s general fund ($392,397), but is spread out among the city’s sanitation, wastewa...
