Long before he made a drinking game or Larry and his brothers named Darryl famous, Bob Newhart was known for his unusual form of standup comedy. In one of his most well-known bits, "Nobody Will Ever Play Baseball," Newhart plays a skeptical marketer hearing Abner Doubleday's unconvincing telephone pitch for baseball. - "18 people? That's a heck of a lot of people." - "You've got a pitcher and a catcher, and they throw a ball back and forth ... and that's it?" - "He may or he... Full story

  • Cookie recipe turns car into oven

Even on a hot day, it doesn't take much to get my mind running in other directions. A few weeks ago, while driving around and wishing my air conditioning would kick in faster, I heard something on the radio for, "dashboard cookies." I instantly listened for more details, as you could throw the word, "cookies," with any other word and get my attention. I bet you're the same way, too. Surgery cookies ... see? Now you're thinking, "Surgery doesn't sound so bad; there are cookies somewhere in the mix. Do I get the cookies before...

  • Team loyalty should have rewards

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

Things are good for me as a baseball fan. The Texas Rangers are leading the American League West, and until Monday night Josh Hamilton had more homers than the San Diego Padres. My Rangers have not always been good. I accept this as the ebb and flow of sports, and enjoy my team during both periods. During a Lubbock trip over the weekend, however, I felt like I was the only one who accepted those rules. I couldn't walk anywhere without seeing a Texas Rangers item being worn by somebody. It's a nice feeling to be around other...

  • Report shows home values decreasing

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

The presence of Cannon Air Force Base and its special operations mission, a local Realtor said, creates more of a trend in Portales and Clovis than any statewide factors. Recent sales figures released by the Realtors Association of New Mexico show an upward trend in sales and a downward trend in median home values, while figures specific to the Clovis Portales Association of Realtors indicates downward trends in both. Brett Johnson, president of the CPAR, noted that sales peaked from 2009 to 2010, when the base was having a...

Steve DeLeon, owner of the Sports Angle, has a lot of classic items in his sports memorabilia story.
