    Stepping into the shoes of archeologists, volunteers from Cannon Air Force Base and the community carefully removed several feet of blown sand, inch by inch from historic Blacktower Cemetery. Capt. Glen Smith, who is leading the project, said the two-day clean-up was going well, but that it was just the beginning of a long project.     When the town of Blacktower faded away, the only thing left behind was its dead. The Blacktower Cemetery, located west of the Chavez West Housing edition near Cannon Air Force Base, appears to be a fraction of what it used to be. About eight headstones stick inches, and possibly feet, above blow sand that has covered the century-old cemetery.
