As Portales Animal Shelter reaches a 90% adoption and transfer rate, Portales Community Services Director Kelly McClellan said the city plans to expand further in providing for the local animal community this November. McClellan said one of the biggest causes of concern is the overwhelming stray population within the city. Judged from its music performance to its general effect, the Clovis High School Wildcat Band finished in third place in the Bands of America’s regional championship Saturday in Flagstaff, Ariz. The rock band Gin Blossoms and country music’s Kip Moore will headline the 37th Clovis Music Festival this spring, officials announced on Friday. In the past six weeks, several animal clinics and shelters have reported an increase in distemper cases in the city of Clovis. Retired Veterinarian Dr. David Hudson said the highly contagious and deadly disease has become a full on “outbreak” within the community. “As a veterinarian in this community for over 30 years, we would see cases of distemper but they were rare.
