Deputies from Roosevelt and Curry counties arrested Parviz Marcus McKeand, 22, Sunday after executing a search warrant at his residence in the 500 block of South Avenue F, according to a release from the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office. Carol Ainsworth’s fourth-period art class at Lindsey Middle School has won the Roosevelt General Hospital Infection Control Poster Contest. Their prize is a pizza party. The other three classes that participated will receive cookies. A grand jury has indicted Isaac Montano, 47, on a charge of first degree murder for the July 7, 2008, death of Donald Chapman. The indictment was returned June 30. Chapman, 69, was found at his home in Portales with multiple stab wounds and died later at a Lubbock hospital. Other counts against Montano include armed robbery, tampering with evidence and possession of a firearm by a felon. No trial date has been set....

In order to lay sewer line connecting Sunland Inc. to the City of Portales sewer system, contractors plan to detour traffic on Kilgore Avenue at the intersection with U.S. 70 July 21-22, according to a city news release. There are different weeds that are native to New Mexico, but some weeds like the musk thistle are trying to take over. The musk thistle is a tall plant with waxy dark green deeply lobed leaves with spines. The leaves can appear to be white to silver-gray.
