Portales Police arrested one man and seized 42 marijuana plants growing at a Portales residence Saturday, according to a news release. Robert Hawkins, 37, of Portales was arrested on outstanding warrants from Curry County for aggravated battery, aggravated burglary, failure to appear and phone harassment after police received information he was staying at a residence at 506 S. A Portales man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for kidnapping and aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer, according to a press release from the 9th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. George Vela, 28, pleaded guilty to the charges and was sentenced by District Judge Drew Tatum Thursday in Portales, according to the release. The New Mexico Department of Transportation District 2 will be installing four-way stop signs at the intersection of N.M. 88 (East Third) and Kilgore in Portales. Installation will be complete Monday, according to a press release. Area fire departments were kept busy Monday fighting two major structure fires along with severe weather in southern Roosevelt County. Portales Fire Department personnel were called to a residential structure fire shortly before midnight Monday in south Portales. According to Roosevelt County Emergency Preparedness Coordinator Keith Wattenbarger, area fire departments were kept busy Monday night and early Tuesday morning with several grass fires sparked by lightning as a storm moved across the county south of Portales. Roosevelt County was placed under a tornado warning by the National Weather Service at 7:12 p.m. Monday. The warning continues until 8 p.m. Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office personnel said fire department personnel had spotted a possible funnel cloud in a storm near Elida. The Eastern New Mexico men’s rodeo team finished their regular season with four members qualifying for the College National Finals Rodeo in Casper, Wyo. Jared Green, placed fourth in bareback riding at the Tarleton State Rodeo, at Stephenville, Texas. Just before 4 p.m. Monday fire units from Portales, Floyd and Elida responded to a grass fire eight miles west of Portales that burned 300 acres along U.S. 70. Officers from the Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office and the Region V Task Force arrested an Elida man Monday on drug trafficking charges, according to a RCSO news release. Antonio Navarette, 41, of Elida was arrested on first-degree felony charges of trafficking cocaine (second offense) and possession of drug paraphernalia. Portales Police were called to a report of shots fired in the vicinity of a fraternity house on West First Street early Sunday morning. Portales Police Capt. Lonnie Berry said no one was hurt in the incident in which one round was discharged around 3 a.m. Sunday. He said no bullets struck the residence.
