  • Sheriff's office investigating sexual contact accusation

    The Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Office is investigating accusations a man had sexual contact with his 13-year-old daughter. A department spokesman also said they are checking into a vehicle rollover that occurred Monday on Roosevelt Road V near N.M. 267. Chief Deputy Malin Parker declined Tuesday to release futher details on either investigation.     The Portales City Council is meeting two hours earlier than usual Tuesday because of the Portales Centennial Street Fair. The meeting starts at 5 p.m. Afterward, council members will relocate to the street fair for a raising of the Portales Centennial flag and a reading of the city’s first ordinance from 100 years ago.   • Official: Air conditioner started fire

    Portales firefighters were called to Heartland Continuing Care about 8:10 p.m. Thursday because of a small fire in an air conditioner in the south dining hall. Heartland staff members moved the residents to the west wing of the building until they were cleared to return, said Portales Fire Department Battalion Chief Lance Hill.     A Thursday afternoon fire destroyed a building used to store dry milk at Western Star Dairy near Floyd. No one was injured. Floyd Fire Department Lt. Steven Cain said Thursday night the 40-foot-by-40-foot shop was a total loss.     Portales firefighters responded to a small fire at Sunland Peanuts about 7:30 p.m. Monday. The plant is located north of the city on U.S. 70. The blaze, according to Sunland employees on site, was restricted to one metal bin of peanuts in the “salter” building.     A man accused of breaking into a Portales home and beating an 82-year-old woman has asked to represent himself at trial. Preston Blake, 25, faces more than 18 years in prison in connection with a 2008 residential burglary at the home of Jo Ann Vickers.     Wofford Livestock of Portales has joined the American Angus Association, according to a news release. The association has nearly 33,000 active adult and junior members, making it the largest beef cattle registry association in the world.
