Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 7, 2024

Local Realtor Brett Johnson called The News not long ago. "I know a guy you need to interview for 'Our People' in your Sunday paper. Alan Kinlund. He just won his second award from Forbes magazine," Johnson said. When you go into Kinlund's meeting room in his office on 21st Street in Clovis, there are the awards to the man from Raton who went to Eastern New Mexico University, spent time in San Francisco and came to Clovis. His 2023 award features a bear, his 2024 award...

  • Remembering great men who were great role models

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Sep 7, 2024

My phone rang last week and the caller ID read Jim Love. There’s only one Jim Love in this area, Coach Jim Love. He was the best thing about ninth-grade football, which proved to be my swan song in the sport. He was one of the best things about Portales High School. All the students and teachers loved Jim Love. He had a way of calling you out if you were out of line that got the message across quickly without him becoming the bad guy, unlike some of the other coaches. We h...

the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 7, 2024

To put it mildly, the Clovis High boys soccer team came to life in the second half on Tuesday night. Locked in a scoreless tie with New Mexico Military at the intermission, the Wildcats put four goals on the board in the first 10 minutes of the second stanza and cruised to a 5-0 victory over the Colts at Leon Williams Stadium. Sophomore forward/midfielder Rony Enamorado notched a hat trick while senior forward Ihab Mesbah posted two goals and a pair of assists for the Cats...

TEXICO – Senior Alex Fuentes scored four touchdowns and threw for one on Friday night, and Texico held on for a 32-19 victory over Farwell. the Staff of The News|Updated Sep 7, 2024

LAS VEGAS, N.M. – Suffice it to say, it was a pleasant bus ride home on Wednesday night for Portales High’s soccer teams. Both squads posted shutout wins, the boys defeating West Las Vegas 2-0 while the girls notched a decisive 5-0 triumph. Goals by senior forward Tony Cordova in the first half and senior forward/midfielder Gabriel Duran in the second were enough for the Rams (4-1) in the boys matchup. Senior defender Elijah Tellez had an assist on Cordova’s goal, while junior midfielder/defender Ediel Aniles assisted on th...

  • Editor's Journal: Rooting for Lincoln Riley

    DavidStevens, Syndicated content|Updated Sep 6, 2024

If anybody needs an excuse to stay up late to watch college football, Muleshoe's Lincoln Riley gives us one. The University of Southern California's third-year coach has been under fire since last year's 8-5 season that was even more disappointing in the Pac 12 (5-4). But all is forgiven for now after Riley's Trojans beat 13th-ranked LSU, 27-20, on Sunday. Sports writer Luca Evans of the San Gabriel Valley Tribune called it Riley's first "signature win" at the West Coast...

  • Faith: What comes from our hearts more important than what's on our chins

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Sep 3, 2024

A gentleman by the name of Maynard Good Stoddard wrote an article for The Saturday Evening Post many moons ago that my brother, for some reason, sent my way. It is entitled “To Beard or Not to Beard.” Stoddard said one day he finally figured out why he had been pushed around at home for so many years. It was, he had discovered, because his chin lacked authority. He mentioned that he felt no need for one of those “Jay Leno jobs.” But he felt a definite need for somethi...

David Stevens and Betty Williamson, The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 3, 2024

On this date ... 1914: The Barbara Worth Hotel in San Diego advertised “A room with a bath for a dollar” in The Clovis Journal. 1941: Portales city officials were making plans for a Sept. 12 statewide blackout. About 80 “special police” were appointed to help organize the civilian defense drill in which all lights were to be shut off and windows covered. The drill was mandatory across New Mexico because military leaders considered border states “of strategic importance from the standpoint of an invasion possibili...

  • ENMU transfer off to fast start in first outing

    Matt Weiner|Updated Sep 3, 2024

Eastern New Mexico University senior fullback Ron Craten cracked up while reflecting upon a smiley face tattoo on his right bicep. Though it's the size of a dime, it unearths who this first-year transfer from Mississippi College is and where he hails from. "It's definitely a country tattoo," laughed Craten, a native of Oak Grove, a rural, low-income town in northeastern Louisiana of fewer than 2,000 people where folks honk their horns to holler at one another, kids fish, play...

  • Opinion: We need to start listening again

    Walter Rubel, Syndicated content|Updated Sep 3, 2024

My best friend Kelly and I frequently had loud, boisterous arguments over politics that led folks to believe that we disagreed about everything. They were mistaken. His views were influenced by watching Fox News, and mine are influenced by watching CNN, so that’s where the arguments would start. But they didn’t end there. It usually didn’t take long for both of us to call BS on the TV talking points and get to the heart of the matter. That didn’t always lead to an agreement, but it almost always led to a common underst...

That’s according to a Facebook post by Sutton’s Bakery. “My inspiration for this is when I started baking it was a change in my life that felt like I had a sense of direction and enjoyment,” owner Nick Dominguez said in an earlier article i...

  • Lincoln-Jackson in 'our hearts forever'

Matt Weiner, The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 3, 2024

After a couple of decades, Lucio Marin can still remember the people – Loyce Hodges was a favorite teacher – and activities – kickball, blacktop basketball – that made Lincoln-Jackson, an original Black school and later a Clovis public school, so special. "I think it really represented the core of what education should be," Marin said. Given the positive experience Marin had, it made Saturday's reunion "bittersweet." "Sweet" because it honored 100 years of the school'...

  • 'Bossman' gave me life lessons, but I mostly didn't use them

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 3, 2024

The other day I was chatting with a friend about a deal they were working on when an old saying came to mind. “It’s like this radio station owner back east told me a long time ago, ‘Everything I own is for sale,’ part of stuff he said on a road trip,” I said. I was remembering “Bossman.” I call a few people “Bossman.” I managed one of Bossman’s radio stations in West Virginia. One day he called me up. “McGee, come on up here and pick me up. It’s a surprise inspection. I want to see what you’re doing at my station,” he said. S...
