    Dan Howard of Elida lost a lifelong friend when Elida High School graduate and New York Yankees minor league manager Oscar Acosta, 49, was killed Wednesday in a car accident in the Dominican Republic. Howard and Acosta played baseball together at Elida High. Acosta was a star pitcher in high school and went on to play college ball at Dallas Baptist and pitched in the minor leagues.     With the June primaries coming up some Roosevelt County residents may not realize that unless they are registered Republicans they will not be able to make a choice for county sheriff. The race for the sheriff’s position is between two Republicans, incumbent sheriff Tom Gossett and sheriff’s deputy Darren Hooker. The primary election will be on June 6.   • Pest experts talk about Africanized bee concerns locally

    Bee experts, health officials and pest control workers want Portales and Clovis residents to be aware of a serious Africanized-bee problem in the area. Lewis Hightower and Bill Moyer of Southwest Pest Control said there is a possibility of even more bee incidents in Roosevelt and Curry counties than occurred last year.   • Gas line break causes partial evacuation at Brown Elementary

    Kindergarten and pre-kindergarten students had to be evacuated for an hour from portable buildings because of a gas leak noon Tuesday. Portales Police Capt. Lonnie Berry said no one was hospitalized or injured and the ambulance didn’t have to respond.     More than 250 people were part of a peaceful march through the streets of Portales on Monday in support of rights for illegal immigrants. The march, which started shortly after 4 p.m. in the downtown area and went to Eastern New Mexico University and back, was comprised of people of all ages. “We wanted to defend the rights of illegal immigrants,” said Miguel Ruvalcaba, a 40-year-old Clovis resident.
