On a muggy and cool Saturday morning, Portales residents lined the sidewalks of Second Street to show their support for past and present members of the United States military. PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University students may see an increase in their tuition and fees next school year — an average of $180 to $200 per student. ENMU administrators during Friday’s Board of Regents’ meeting in Ruidoso presented a proposal to increase tuition and fees by 6.45 percent. “We will have either the lowest or second to lowest increase in the state for all four-year institutions,” said ENMU President Steven Gamble. A Portales man faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted on charges he embezzled more than $600,000 from the armored car service that employed him. Scott Kirby, 22, was indicted Wednesday. Ninth Judicial District Attorney Matt Chandler said he expects additional arrests in the case, but would not elaborate. Lonnie Berry said officers responded to a call about bees at a residence on the 1700 block of South Avenue B on Tuesday. He said officers confirmed bees were on the property and notified exterminators from Southwest Pest Control. Portales High School students in speech competitions may not receive as much fanfare as the students in the basketball state tournament but nonetheless they still had the spotlight shine on them this week during the 2006 New Mexico High School Speech Tournament in Portales. Anthony Schroeder, tournament director and Eastern New Mexico University professor, said more than 250 students from 16 high schools are competing in the tournament. PORTALES — A Portales man was sentenced Monday to 18 years in prison for his role in the 2004 death of Amber Robinson of Portales. Ninth Judicial District Judge Stephen Quinn sentenced Clifford “Bubba” Baca, 21, after Baca pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and tampering with evidence. A week-long trial had been scheduled to begin Monday, but the plea agreement was reached instead. Robinson, 19, was killed in late April of 2004. Debi Lee, Portales city manager, informed city councilors that water department officials believe the failure of the water pipe which caused a water outage on Feb. 18 was because it was chipped when the pipe was placed in 1992. Lee said that over time the chip turned into a crack and it expanded. A Portales High School senior was arrested last week and remains in the Roosevelt County Detention Center after being charged with first-degree criminal sexual penetration, Portales Police Capt. Lonnie Berry said. Daniel Aranda, 18, is charged as a juvenile. They came to discuss science-fiction and they also came to honor one of the genre’s most enduring masters, Jack Williamson, at the 30th annual Jack Williamson Lectureship at Eastern New Mexico University Thursday. Williamson, a Portales resident, who has been writing for 77 years, turns 98 in April. Friends and family said this week they weren’t too sure Jack would be able to attend because of health reasons.
