    Travelers will be able to “Stay Smart” in Portales now that the new Holiday Inn Express is open. Chelsey Banister, Holiday Inn Express general manager, said it has been a slow start but feels business will pick up once the word gets around that the hotel is open. “Stay Smart” is the motto for Holiday Inn Express.   • Spanish speller moves on to state spelling bee

    It started with eight students from the Portales School District, but quickly it dwindled down to two girls and Jessica Lavalle was able to correctly spell “volver” to win the district Spanish Spelling Bee. Lavalle won on Feb. 24 and will be competing in Albuquerque in the New Mexico Spanish Spelling Bee contests against other New Mexico students. “Volver” means to turn or return. “I’m so happy,” Lavalle said.     The New Mexico Public School Facility Authority allocated money to the Portales School District to fix roofs of some of the school buildings. The problem is it wasn’t enough to fix all the roofs that need repairing, according to school officials.     Tony Parra: PNT staff writer It was the third meeting in eight days for the Portales Rams and Ruidoso Warriors, but this time it had more meaning with the same results. The Portales Rams defeated the Warriors, 52-41, to claim the District 4-3A championship on Saturday night. The Rams defeated Ruidoso, 66-40, on Feb. 17 and 40-37 on Monday.   • Community Service Center drops transit service in city's lap

    Portales Area Transit system will have a new operator next month. Community Services Center will end its affiliation with the bus system on March 24, its Executive Director Pam O’Malley announced in a press release. O’Malley said the reason was because the city wanted to run the PAT system. The city of Portales will take over on March 25, City Manager Debi Lee said.     Sentencing for a former Roosevelt County Sheriff’s deputy convicted of criminal sexual penetration has been delayed at least 60 days while the defendant undergoes a diagnostic evaluation. Ninth Judicial District Judge Ted Hartley agreed to the evaluation for former Deputy Gary Adkins during court proceedings Thursday at the Roosevelt County Courthouse.     PORTALES — Officials have planned a meeting Friday to discuss ways of repairing broken water lines without having to shut off water to the entire city of Portales. The community was without water almost 24 hours on Saturday when a pipe cracked and water began to burst out of the ground on the city’s west side.     PORTALES — Horsemanship and quilt designs were among the demonstrations during the first day of the 14th annual New Mexico Ag Expo at the Roosevelt County Fairgrounds.     The talk on Tuesday evening during the Portales City Council meeting was remaining concerns of the lack of water valves and a way of allowing water to flow without having to shut water down to the entire city of Portales.     The 25th Annual Festival Romanico enticed 400 to 600 high school students to the campus of Eastern New Mexico University for Spanish-speaking competitions.
