PORTALES — Portales residents in the 600 block of South Avenue A were without water at different times on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Officials blamed broken water pipes on poor maps being used to guide workers installing a fiber optic network for Yucca Telecom. The number of students eating breakfast at James Elementary doubled to more than 450 on Thursday as free breakfasts were offered to everybody at the school. Second and third-graders at James Elementary began eating at 8 a.m. and finished approximately 15 minutes later. Brazier Construction officials are hopeful to start repaving of New Mexico Highway 206 by mid-March. A three-mile portion of loose gravel leading into the town of Dora has left area residents and travelers to deal with poor road conditions throughout the winter. Anthony Pacheco, a Brazier Construction paving supervisor for the project, said once they begin laying the asphalt they will complete the work 60 to 90 days later. Roosevelt County commissioners, during a county meeting on Tuesday, approved a proclamation prohibiting burning within the county. The commissioners received the request from Portales Fire Department officials. The commissioners prohibited burning due to the lack of precipitation, high winds and low humidity, wildland grasses and fuels in all of Roosevelt County are at a hazardous level for burning. The passage of the Public School Capital Improvements Tax will not increase tax rates because the tax rate is currently in place. Tony Parra: PNT Staff Writer The Portales Area Transit system will be getting a new 15-passenger van this month thanks to $25,083 from the U.S. Department of Transportation. According to a press release from U.S. Sen. Jeff Bingaman’s office, the City of Portales will be receiving $25,083 to support public transportation in Portales.
