In 2006, Jimmy Carter published a controversial and best-selling book on Palestine with the word "apartheid" in the title. Then he went on a whirlwind book tour, captured on film by Jonathan Demme, to promote it. Carter spoke, signed books and calmly rebutted criticism and attacks with his trademark Sunday-school demeanor. Allies, including Nancy Pelosi, then on the verge of becoming speaker of the House, were annoyed. Enemies were livid. As for Carter, he was 82 years old...

Michael Sinclair came to Portales from Beaumont, Texas, on a recruiting trip, absolutely not intending to become an Eastern New Mexico University Greyhound. “I just wanted to take the trip,” he said Saturday at a news conference honoring the 2024 inductees into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame. But on that trip, Sinclair watched a fellow recruit disrespect a girl neither of the young men knew. “Me and the guy actually got into a fight,” he said. Sinclair had been planning to sign with Texas A&I (now Texas A&M-Kin...

FARWELL – On paper, it looked like an even matchup. And for a half, it was just that. Leading by only three points at the intermission, Farwell outscored Spearman 42-13 over the final two stanzas to register a 69-37 win over the Lynx on Monday afternoon. Junior guards Braddock Foster (24) and Hudson Agee (15) and freshman guard Coy Miller (12) accounted for most of the scoring for the Steers (14-3), ranked 11th in Texas Class 2A by MaxPreps. As the old saying goes, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. Down by a point and in need of a break in the closing seconds, Clovis High's girls got one when Amarillo Caprock's inbounds pass instead hit the bottom of the backboard with 5.2 seconds left, giving the Lady Cats the ball with no time coming off the clock. They took advantage of the opportunity. Senior guard Amanda De La Rosa found sophomore post Kerrington Goff with an entry pass, and she converted a 3-point...

The discount retail chain Big Lots has reached a deal that will keep hundreds of its stores and distribution centers open. That’s according to multiple news reports. The Associated Press reported on its website: “Big Lots said Friday it will be sold to Gordon Brothers Retail Partners, a firm that specializes in distressed companies. Gordon Brothers will then transfer Big Lots’ stores, distribution centers and other assets to other retailers.” The fate of the Clovis Big Lots store was unknown early this week. A Big Lots em...
RUIDOSO - Looking down at Ruidoso, the Alpine Village is marred by thousands of charred trees. But the view also presents signs of life, grass a foot in length in some places sprouting from the ground. It's a welcomed sight for the people of Ruidoso, who this summer experienced the South Fork and Salt fires - burning more than 25,500 acres and more than 1,500 structures, leaving two dead. Floods also followed, about a dozen, in the days and weeks after. In the aftermath of...

On this date … 1903: Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway workers began construction on the Belen Cutoff – 268 miles of track that connected Texico and the Texas-New Mexico border to the AT&SF’s main line near Belen, south of Albuquerque. The new route, avoiding the mountains of northern New Mexico, led to the creation of Clovis in 1907. 1931: About 100 men, most armed with shotguns, gathered outside the Clovis News-Journal office on Main Street. Then, “bent upon bloodshed,” they sped out of the city, the newspaper...
Brandon Granger, the son of Texas Republican Rep. Kay Granger, informed the Dallas Express his mother has been battling “some dementia issues late in the year” and had been residing in an assisted-care facility for the last half year. The most recent vote she cast on the House floor was in July, and she has been absent for more than 300 votes since then. While this is certainly alarming news to hear, Granger is hardly an anomaly The median age of senators in the incoming 119th...
Will somebody please tell Donald Trump he won? I’m sure he’s seen the official results by now. I’m sure he knows he’ll be moving back into the White House on Jan. 20. But he’s still acting like he’s on the campaign trail. He’s firing off tweets, trolling his opponents and talking about the United States buying Greenland, retaking control of the Panama Canal and making jokes that he wants Canada to become the 51st state. It’s weird, what Trump’s doing. It’s the Christmas holida...
The election, crime and the climate. I think those are the three biggest stories to come out of New Mexico in 2024. There weren’t any real surprises in the state’s own elections, with all incumbents winning at the federal level and Democrats easily hanging on to power in Santa Fe. But the impact Donald Trump’s election will have on New Mexico will be unmistakable for a border state such as ours. The president-elect’s promise of mass deportations and tighter border security will hit New Mexico families hard, since many ha...
For many years now, almost every year during Christmas, I’ve enjoyed making Charles Dickens’ venerable A Christmas Carol part of my Yuletide celebration. When I was a child, our family always watched a television version of that great tale sometime during the holidays. My sister, an unabashed lover of all things Christmas, made sure that each year our old TV was tuned to the appropriate channel at the appropriate time. As an adult, I’ve enjoyed watching many of those varie...
A humanitarian. Community oriented. A gift from God. That's how area residents remember Jimmy Carter, the 39th U.S. president who died Sunday at age 100. Democratic Party of Curry County Chair Jamaal Williams remembers Carter's post-presidency work. "The Habitat for Humanity, his work and dedication. I think as an ex-president he was one of the few I've seen to use his power to help regular Americans," Williams said. "He was actually out there doing it himself with his hands."...
I once had a mannequin named Ted. Just a petrified, barefoot, one-handed dude who sat in my living room when I lived in Roswell. Ted was a gift from someone I’ll just call “The San Patricio Artist.” The San Patricio Artist did mannequin art. One weird work of the artist was mannequin arms sticking out of the ground in the garden. Many called it “creepy.” I just thought it artistic, but weird. I decided to put Ted out on my front porch sitting in a rocking chair, with his hand raised in greeting. Days later as I got out of my...
Editor's note: This is one in a continuing series of interviews with local officials and community leaders. Lance Pyle is Curry County manager. What have you learned from the audit of OVG360 approved in November? Do you anticipate the county looking into other options for managing the Events Center anytime soon? A: The audit is...
