    Kurt Munz-Raper|Updated Jan 6, 2017

Two religious organizations in eastern New Mexico — one returning to Portales after a long absence and one in Clovis continuing work — share the same purpose: Healing. The Celebrate Recovery program is returning to Portales at First Baptist Church. Portales resident Vicki Bannister is heading the program with her family. Bannister said she attended programs for the recovery ministry in Clovis after looking for programs locally to help her son overcome addiction. "Through this...

  • I like 'holy' holidays best

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Jan 6, 2017

For years now I’ve been trying to get my head right about the New Year’s “holiday.” And there we have it. Tripped and skinned my knee on the problem right there in my first paragraph. New Year’s Day is indeed a holiday, but, if you ask me, the closest it gets to being a “holy” day is that it’s the eighth day of Christmas. Now that I will celebrate. (No maids a-milking required.) Don’t get me wrong. I like days off for pretty much any reason not related to sickness or death...

On this date ... 1972: A Clovis man freed a duck from a frozen pond, then needed to be rescued himself. Paul Jones, a municipal golf course maintenance supervisor, freed the duck in a "small, flat-bottomed skiff" before his vessel capsized, the Clovis News-Journal reported. Jones tried to swim to shore, but the icy water paralyzed him, the paper reported. A witness, Al Billingham, saw Jones struggling, jumped in the pond, and helped him to shore. Both men recovered from the...

  • Most resolutions lack substance

    Judy Brandon|Updated Jan 6, 2017

I found an interesting news article about the New Year’s resolutions of extremely successful people. Even though I didn’t recognize anyone interviewed, the subject matter raised my curiosity because these people were considered successful. The interviewer asked each person to name a resolution or personal areas of focus for the coming year. The results surprised me. One person wanted to do more repurposing, like furniture clothes and such. Another executive wanted to “di...

  • Once a farmer, always a hand

    Audra Brown|Updated Jan 6, 2017

Some skills are perishable and some skills go out of style, but the level of competence you achieve working as a farmer or rancher tends to be pretty stable. It is a hard-won handiness that is always in demand, no matter how far you may stray from the path of agriculture. As we’ve discussed before, the concept of a vacation is quite foreign to the dedicated farmer or rancher, and indeed, alien to the man or woman who is both. There are those, who, for one reason or another, le...
