  • Cavegirls turn back Lady Rams

the Staff of The News|Updated Jan 7, 2025

After opening the Portales Shootout with a couple of lopsided wins, Portales High's girls fell short of completing a weekend sweep on Saturday. Senior guard Abbey Dugan knocked down a go-ahead 3-pointer during a game-ending 7-0 run and Carlsbad handed the Lady Rams a 37-34 setback at the Ram Athletic Center. PHS coach Wade Fraze said his squad knew exactly what it was going to get with the Cavegirls. The loss prevented Portales (6-8) from climbing to the .500 mark. "We knew...

  • ENMU women edge Mustangs

the Staff of The News|Updated Jan 7, 2025

Early on, it looked like Eastern New Mexico University's women were headed for a second consecutive Lone Star Conference home loss. Trailing 19-8 at the quarter after committing eight turnovers, the Greyhounds closed to within a point by halftime and the game seesawed the rest of the way before senior forward Ishauna Hunter banked in the game-winner as time expired for a 56-54 win over Midwestern State on Sunday at Steve Loy Arena. Freshman guard/forward Kirbie Cash went into...

  • Cats lead wire-to-wire in 75-62 win

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Jan 7, 2025

There haven't been many, if any, games this season in which Clovis High's boys have led wire-to-wire. Coming off a tiring trip to Albuquerque the previous night, the Wildcats accomplished that feat with a solid 75-62 win over Santa Fe High on Saturday at Rock Staubus Gymnasium. Senior forward/guard Jayden Cox led the way with 22 points, while junior guard Joseph "Jo Jo" Cavazos did much of the ballhandling for the Cats and chipped in a personal-best 16 – scoring four points i...

  • Austin lifts Hounds to win

the Staff of The News|Updated Jan 7, 2025

No one probably foresaw a 16-0 lead over the first four minutes for Eastern New Mexico University's men on Sunday. Despite that, it took every bit of energy for the Greyhounds to pull out their Lone Star Conference tilt against Midwestern State at Steve Loy Arena. Freshman guard Mo Austin scored seven of his game-high 22 points in the final 2 ½ minutes, including the game-winner with three seconds left, as ENMU claimed an 83-81 Lone Star Conference victory over the...

the Staff of The News|Updated Jan 7, 2025

Curtis tied the state record for 3s in a game, previously set by Springer’s Estavan Romero in 2016. Meantime, the Wolverines set a record with 23 trifectas, eclipsing the mark of 22 set by Magdalena in 2018. Curtis’ other three points came when he was fouled on a 3-point try and made all three foul shots. Texico (9-0), ranked No. 1 in Class 2A by MaxPreps, led 28-5 at the quarter and the entire secon...

  • Opinion: Carter's post-presidential career superb example

Elwood Watson, The Staff of The News|Updated Jan 7, 2025

His tenure as president was punctuated with unrelenting adversity, tortured from the outset by obscenely high inflation and a post-Vietnam-and-Watergate nation that had a sour disposition. His fragmented administration was disproportionately populated by political cronies from his home state of Georgia. His micromanaging style drew widespread derision and his right of center values resulted in serious conflicts with a much more liberal and progressive Congress. In the eyes of...

  • Opinion: Would be nice to have principled man in today's politics

    Tom McDonald, Syndicated content|Updated Jan 7, 2025

In 1977, when Jimmy Carter took the presidential oath of office, I was there. In the grand scheme of things, that’s not a big deal, except to me. Back then, I was wandering from town to town and job to job, so much so that I didn’t even cast a ballot in the 1976 general election that elected Carter. It’s the only presidential election I ever missed, and I’ve always regretted it. A few weeks earlier, I had hastily left a job in West Virginia, leaving behind a few things that I couldn’t carry away with my thumb. I left my t...

  • Opinion: In era of unexpected, one decision shocked

    Christine Flowers, Syndicated content|Updated Jan 7, 2025

Every year is interesting in its own way. This one included the death of a hero, Alexei Navalny; the toppling of a dictator, Bashar Al Assad; the implosion of a president, Joe Biden; two assassination attempts on a former president, Donald Trump; the conviction for hush money payments made by a former president, Donald Trump, and the re-election of a former president, Donald Trump. Any one of the above-mentioned events would have been shocking taken in isolation. Personally,...

  • Faith: God's government gives liberty

    Gordon Runyan, Religion columnist|Updated Jan 7, 2025

Winston Churchill is credited with saying, “Democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others.” That’s clever. Yet, here we are, wondering how it got so weird around here. Churchill’s quote, though witty, is inaccurate. The Hebrew Scriptures in the Bible (what we regularly call the Old Testament) present us with a better way. Somewhere in the ballpark of 2000 B.C., God went and pulled a nation for himself out of the midst of another nation, with great power, signs, and wonders. They were a couple million...

  • Mom was always full of surprises

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Jan 7, 2025

There’s this woman on Facebook who spends her time making little videos of herself without makeup and with makeup. Her no-makeup visage is so radically different from her made-up face with fake teeth that I really wonder if it’s the same person. I mean, I suppose it is because she’s not selling anything. It’s just some of the stuff one sees on the internet. My mom had fake teeth to hide the place where her own two front teeth used to be. Mom had a great sense of humor, so I don’t think she’d mind if I tell a tale at her expe...

His law enforcement career has spanned 37 years, according to a city news release. "I don't know. I'll probably just sit beneath a shade tree, drink diet Cokes and play video games with my grandkids when they come over," Rice said Tuesday morning when asked about his future plans. "Carolyn (his wife) and me and Biscuit (his dog)...

  • Changes are coming to The News in 2025

David Stevens, The Staff of The News|Updated Jan 7, 2025

The great philosopher Will Rogers told us a century ago, “Even if you are on the right track, you’ll get run over if you just sit there.” We believe our newspaper is on the right track as we move through the ever-changing landscape of the 21st century. And we’ll be making some significant changes this year in effort to remain a valuable asset to our communities. Some highlights: • Beginning next month, we’ll be publishing once per week in print. • Mural at Rock Staubus 'our shared legacy'

Grant McGee, The Staff of The News|Updated Jan 7, 2025

It's something to see. That's how Clovis High basketball coach Corey Pickett describes the new mural at the entrance to Rock Staubus Gym. "That mural turned out pretty good. It pops when you walk in here. You want to look at it," Pickett said Monday. Joe Strickland, Clovis schools' deputy superintendent, explained how it came to be. "The mural was designed by a committee that was spearheaded by Mandy Carpenter, executive director of Talent Management for CMS. Staff and...
