COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — After picking up a pair of Lone Star Conference wins over last week, Eastern New Mexico’s women’s basketball team jumped to seventh place in the D2SIDA South Central Regional Poll Monday. The poll, sponsored by the College Sports Information Directors of America, is voted upon by six sports information directors in the region — home to the LSC, Heartland and Rocky Mountain Athletic conferences. The Greyhounds (9-3) have been as high as fifth in the poll, but fell to eighth following a Dec. 17 loss...

CLOVIS - The Clovis girls basketball team has largely suffered its 10 losses this season due to offensive lulls where they either can't find easy shots or don't hit them when available. The Wildcats found plenty of easy shots Saturday, but turned things into a blowout with a few hard ones too. A rejuvenated third-quarter defense put Goddard off balance, and the Lady Cats never trailed in the second half of Saturday's 59-45 victory at Rock Staubus Gymnasium. The win snapped a...

Well, here we find ourselves again in January, and maybe some reflection is in order. On the one hand, author Thomas Mann is right: “Time has no divisions to mark its passage, there is never a thunder-storm or blare of trumpets to announce the beginning of a new month or year. Even when a new century begins it is only we mortals who ring bells and fire off pistols.” So a new year? January? Big deal. On the other hand, I’m always a little surprised when 12:01 a.m. of the new ye...

GALLUP — The Clovis Wildcats and Hobbs Eagles had to drive across the state to see each other for the first time in 2018-19. The Wildcats hope the second meetup during district time is a different story. The Eagles had plenty of scoring and plenty of balance, steadily pulling away to top the Wildcats 88-73 to claim the Gallup Tournament championship Saturday night. Clovis visited Lovington Tuesday and will host Santa Fe Saturday night. Rae Tarin had 22 points and hit five of Hobbs’ 13 3-pointers, and five of their six scorers...

  • Money for wall better spent elsewhere

As I write this column, President Donald Trump has not yet carried out his threat — he says he doesn’t make threats, but I don’t know what else to call it — to declare a national emergency in order to build his wall at the Mexican border. Should he? In my opinion, no. Can he? Can he declare that people, including many children, who seek to escape brutal, lawless gang rule in Central America by coming to the U.S. constitute an emergency threat to national security? Maybe, it seems. Current law is vague about what can constit...
