    Adrian Gomez, Albuquerque Journal|Updated Jan 9, 2021

Movie theaters are still closed due to the pandemic, but New Mexicans will get a chance to see Tom Hanks’ “News of the World.” The film was released on Christmas in theaters — just in time for Oscar consideration. Beginning on Friday, the New Mexico-filmed production will be available on-demand via Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango Now, Google Play, Vudu and Xfinity. Principal photography began on the project in October 2019, where it filmed in and around Santa Fe for a few months. “News of the World” is based on th...

  • Senator files legislation for applicant secrecy

    Dan Boyd, Albuquerque Journal|Updated Jan 9, 2021

SANTA FE — An Albuquerque state senator has — once again — filed legislation that would allow the names of applicants for top public school, law enforcement and other taxpayer-funded positions to be kept secret. While at least three finalists for any such public positions would still have to be disclosed, the bill filed by Sen. Bill Tallman, a Democrat, is already generating opposition from at least one government transparency group. A spokeswoman for Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham also said Thursday the governor is commi...

    Dan Boyd, Albuquerque Journal|Updated Jan 9, 2021

SANTA FE — Plexiglass. Online voting on bills. And a face mask requirement for those present in the state Capitol. New Mexico’s 60-day legislative session will begin this month as scheduled — but in virtual reality. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Roundhouse will once again be off-limits to members of the public and lobbyists for the entirety of the session that begins Jan. 19, the director of the Legislature’s administrative arm said Wednesday. In addition, the unprecedented session will likely feature many la...

    Alisa Boswell-Gore, Correspondent|Updated Jan 9, 2021

Jon Shrader was a man of few words. But when he had something to say, it was always worth listening to, according to his family and coworkers. The longtime owner and operator of Clovis Family Healthcare died on Dec. 18 at 57. "We'd always joke around in the office that he was a man of few words, but when he did talk, he was full of wisdom and generosity. He was just a kind, generous, humble person," said nurse practitioner Amanda Elam, who worked with Shrader at his clinic....

    Alisa Boswell-Gore, Correspondent|Updated Jan 9, 2021

Billy Joe Essary never met a stranger. Everyone was his friend, according to Essary's family. "He made everybody feel like a friend," said Gary Essary of his father. "He had this way of making strangers feel at home," said Amy Essary, the wife of his son, Carl. "I knew that, but I don't think I realized just how much, because I have met so many people who see him as a close friend and have said they will miss him deeply." Essary, a lifetime Roosevelt County resident, died on...

    Los Angeles Times|Updated Jan 9, 2021

WASHINGTON, D.C. — In images posted on social media and beamed around the world Wednesday, small clusters of U.S. Capitol Police officers retreated, fell away from violent assaults or simply moved aside as a large mob descended on the seat of American legislative power.
