Last week I was reading a commentary about people whose lives make a difference for the better. The article focused on people from all walks of life and all age groups. The one thing in common in all the people profiled was they had a positive impact on our world. The article focused on one woman wholives in a major metropolitan area in the United States and runs a street ministry that feeds, provide clothes and medial care for the needy. The article had to do with people who...
New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson addresses a crowd of local residents, public officials and media Thursday at Clovis-Carver Public Library. (CNJ staff writer: Eric Kluth) Gov. Bill Richardson said Thursday he wants to see New Mexico students stay in the state and use their talents here rather than seek higher wage jobs elsewhere. As part of that initiative, Richardson said Clovis Community College will receive $650,000 to fund a technical and vocational education center during a press conference Thursday at the Clovis-Carver...
Floyd fourth-grader Aracel Mendoza listens to Roosevelt County 4-H Agent Patrick Kircher talk about corn and its uses Thursday during the Southwest Dairy Farmer’s annual Kid, Kows and More program. (CNJ staff photo: Eric Kluth) A group of fourth-grade students listened attentively Thursday as Kay Lindsey separated the layers of a giant, stuffed burger. She traveled more than 180 miles, leaving her 65,000-acre ranch in Claunch, for Curry County’s Fairgrounds. Why? To share her rancher’s wisdom with 950 students from New Mexic...

Bernie Yruegas has a simple reason he waited until the last minute to do his taxes. “I just plumb forgot,” said Yruegas, whose wife called him at work and said, “taxes!” Yruegas was one of a handful of last-minute taxpayers in a back room Thursday at the Clovis-Carver Public Library seeking assistance from AARP tax-aide volunteers. Yruegas’ wife did not give him “heck” but would have, he said, if it had missed today’s filing date for state and federal taxes. For those last-minute filers, the Clovis Post Office will pro...
A task force met Thursday evening to discuss strategies for a proposed railroad overpass at Martin Luther King Boulevard. Central in Thursday’s discussion was whether the overpass should be restricted to residential and emergency traffic and whether the bridge should be two or four lanes. “The issue of maintaining the road is very important to the city,” said Angelina Baca-Rodriguez, who was chosen to chair the committee comprising city, state and county officials as well as area residents. “If you allow big trucks to go (... It’s a sad sign of how starved Republicans in the House of Representatives are for leadership that they continue to rally around Majority Leader Tom DeLay, even as doubts deepen about the ethics of the former Texas exterminator whose delicate touch earned him the nickname “The Hammer.” For the sake of the party — but even more importantly, the institution — Republican colleagues should ask DeLay to give up his leadership post until all allegations against him have been investigated and resolved. Failure to do so will furt... Full story
My 14-year-old daughter Laura recently got to fly for the first time. In fact, she traveled by almost every possible mode — land, sea, plane and train — in the course of only a few days. Laura and I accompanied my friend Yolanda to Houston last week for outpatient eye surgery. We were there to make sure Yolanda got back OK from the hospital to the hotel to recover. Once we got Yolanda safely back to her room and all medicated, she urged Laura and I to explore H-Town. The opportunities were seemingly unlimited: The Johnson Spa...

Sullivan and Thomas West were both 3-for-4 for Elida, while Trenton Chenault hit a pair of run-scoring singles. Chenault pitched the first two innings and Sullivan worked the final three. I was kicking back in Elida with my good friend Kent, bard of the Pecos. We were having iced tea, talking about his return to this small outpost of Roosevelt County. During a lull in the conversation, my mind wandered to the rifle by the door. There weren’t any firearms in my parents’ home. I don’t know why, I didn’t ask. Shotguns were always around when I went camping in the Boy Scouts, though. One of the guys in the troop, Woody, seemed to always have a shotgun of one type or another. One night inside the troop’s big log ca...

The Portales High tennis teams got back on track Thursday. Two days after most of the varsity players were left at home for a school violation, the Rams and Lady Rams had their way with District 4-3A rival Lovington in rolling to 9-0 victories. Other than No. 4 singles, where Jessica Bul... Full story

The closing of another school year brings back many thoughts filed in my mental book of memories. The simple trust and faith of children are traits I need everyday. When facing obstacles in my life, I think of the problem from the children’s perspective. “We have to go on to third grade because we’re growing up,” one of my second grade students told me near the end of school. Then I remembered the trauma I felt when our own sons began to leave the nest. “You’ve been wonderful parents but it’s time for me to grow up,” our...

PORTALES — For Eastern New Mexico University freshman Jenny Gheer, the sign hanging from her neck said everything she needed to say. And if it didn’t, she had a pen to help. Gheer was one of many in the community who took part Wednesday in Day of Silence, a national program designed to silently protest unequal treatment towards the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community. Until the 6 p.m. ceremony at the Campus Union Building’s patio, Gheer and more than 100 other students and community members signified the day by... Full story
