  • Jury holds campaign ad makers accountable

At times it seems nothing could possibly be shocking anymore when it comes to American politics. Sure, it's easy to turn on cable news talk programs and see Rachel Maddow, Ann Coulter, James Carville or Bill O'Reilly work themselves into a lather over something they absolutely can't believe came out of the mouth of a politician whose views disagree with their own. But that's theater. Trumped-up, overblown shock has become a staple of how we participate and consume politics. Just because the talking heads feign shock and...

  • Their view: Buffett rule still makes Main Street sense

    Lew Prince CMI columnist

Lew Prince, managing partner of an independent music store, Vintage Vinyl, in St. Louis and member of Business for Shared Prosperity, supports the "Buffett Rule." As a music store owner, the Buffett I'm usually concerned with is Jimmy Buffett of Margaritaville. But a bunch of lobbying groups who claim to represent small business are making me mad. They're trying to scare people into believing that job-creating small businesses like mine won't hire people if the "Buffett Rule" or anything like it is enacted. What hogwash. The...

    Tom Philpott Military Update

Despite enormous stress on military families from repeated wartime deployments and long periods living apart, service marriages are showing a level of resilience that social scientists can't yet explain. Military divorce rates have climbed only gradually in recent years and, according to a report in the Journal of Family Issues this month, have not exceeded the rate of broken marriages reported among civilian peers. Competitive wartime pay, extra allowances for being married in service and family support programs could be...
