New Mexico prosecutors will file felony criminal charges against actor Alec Baldwin and the armorer of the low-budget western "Rust," following the fatal shooting of the film's cinematographer. The charges represent a dramatic culmination of more than a year of speculation over who, if anyone, would be held accountable for the tragic death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, a rising star in the film industry. Described by police as the “mastermind” behind the attacks, Pena is accused of paying men to conduct two of the shootings and allegedly “pulled the trigger” during one as well. “This type of radicalism is a threat to...

the Staff of The News|Updated Jan 17, 2023

ALBUQUERQUE – Clovis High's swim teams got a look at some of the better competition in the state in Saturday's Albuquerque Academy Invitational, and in the end they did all right. Nobody was going to beat the host Chargers, but the Wildcats and Lady Wildcats gave it a relatively good go, both placing second. The boys had 572 points to 596 for Academy, while the girls tallied 585 to 693 ½ for the Chargers. "We stuck some kids in events where we wanted to get qual (...

  • Faith: 'Better together' wonderfully true for those who love each other, the Lord

    Curtis Shelburne, Religion columnist|Updated Jan 17, 2023

Forty-seven years. That’s how long my wife and I have been married. It probably seems longer to her. I’m counting pretty heavily on the fact that breaking in a new husband would likely be for her, at this point, more trouble than it’s worth. These days, the statistics for folks who get married as young as we did are pretty grim. And I will admit, if one of my grandkids expressed a desire to get married at age 18, I’d likely need some sort of sedation. But for those who marry y...

CLEMSON, S.C. — Garrett Riley is officially the new offensive coordinator for the Clemson football program. The school’s board of trustees compensation committee approved Riley’s hire on Friday afternoon. Riley, a Muleshoe native, most recently held the same position at TCU and was named the Broyles Award winner as the nation’s top assistant coach. • Lady Cats extend winning streak to 10

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Jan 17, 2023

CLOVIS – Coming off a major road win over Onate the night before in Las Cruces, Clovis High girls coach Jeff Reed wasn't quite sure what to expect less than 24 hours later against Lovington. As it turned out, the Lady Wildcats put any anxiety to rest fairly quickly in Saturday's matchup at Rock Staubus Gym, stretching their winning streak to 10 with a 53-36 victory. True, the Lady Wildcats (14-3) have a stronger, more experienced team than Lovington, but Reed was concerned a...

  • Demons ride guard's 31 points to victory

Dave Wagner, The Staff of The News|Updated Jan 17, 2023

CLOVIS – Little things are still getting the best of the Clovis High boys basketball team. In Saturday’s game against Santa Fe High at Rock Staubus Gym, both teams made six 3-pointers and 12 free throws. It’s just that it took the Wildcats more shots to do it. Junior guard Lukas Turner scored 31 points and the Demons led almost all the way in subduing the Cats 62-56. A 7-0 start promptly put Clovis behind the 8-ball. A long 3-pointer by junior forward Champ Gooden pulled the Cats even 13-13 at the quarter, and they manag...

  • Sometimes you stumble across extraordinary story

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Jan 17, 2023

Sometimes, quite by accident, you stumble across a most extraordinary life story. That happened to me this week. The folks at Portales High School were looking to complete a list of former superintendents and were missing part of the name of one of the first people to hold down that job. They knew a “Mr. Skinner” had been the third superintendent of the school, occupying the post from 1904-1906. They had first names — or at least initials — for all of the others who held th...

    Michael Reagan, Syndicated content|Updated Jan 17, 2023

Don’t worry, America. Big Media will never let Joe Biden get away with illegally taking classified documents from the White House in 2016 and stashing them at his office and in his garage next to his Corvette. The ace reporters at liberal places like the New York Times, CNN and NBC are already digging deep into the facts of Biden’s mishandling of classified documents. Soon the Big Media will be telling us exactly what classified documents Biden illegally took home, where he...

  • Opinion: Black people props to Republicans

    Elwood Watson, Syndicated content|Updated Jan 17, 2023

The drama surrounding Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s speakership bid remains nothing short of surreal. It took 15 bids to secure the votes required to become speaker of the House. In his fatalistic desire to become speaker, McCarthy made numerous concessions to his opponents that have all but promised to nullify any real power or influence he will likely have. An interesting side story stemming from the drama was the effort by far-right House members to support Rep. Byron Donalds of Fl...

  • Opinion: More 'professional' PRC commission off to shaky start

    Albuquerque Journal, Syndicated content|Updated Jan 17, 2023

The constitutional amendment voters approved in 2020 changing the New Mexico Public Regulation Commission from five elected members to three appointed ones was aimed, in large part, at ensuring a more qualified board to handle technical and important issues. The belief also was that the commission would have more credibility than previous boards, which had their share of controversy — even scandal. So much for good intentions. It turns out the Republican grocery store owner from Clayton, appointed to the PRC last month by D...

Kathleen Stinson, The Staff of The News|Updated Jan 17, 2023

Eastern New Mexico Rising is trying to bring anti-abortion ordinances passed in Clovis and Roosevelt County to a vote of the people. The group is circulating petitions in both communities calling for elections to decide the issue. If the voters say they want to make the decision on these ordinances instead of their elected officials, there would be a stay of the ordinances blocking them from taking effect until the vote is taken, said Laura Wight, co-founder of Eastern New Mexico Rising. Both ordinances are currently in...
