  • A few favorite quotes from American presidents

    Karl Terry, Local columnist|Updated Jan 17, 2025

As we prepare for the (peaceful) transfer of power this week it’s a great time to look back on some of my favorite quotes by American presidents. Who knows, we might get a new doozy during the inaugural address. Here are some of my favorites. Dwight D. Eisenhower — “I like Ike.” OK, he was only in office the first year of my life, so I don’t remember anything he said. That’s just as well because a Google of his quotes is just as boring as the man. But that campaign bu...

  • Opinion: Government not here to help anyone

    Kent McManigal, Local columnist|Updated Jan 17, 2025

After watching the devastation of Hurricane Helene and now the Los Angeles wildfires, do you understand yet that government isn’t there to help you? Do you understand it can’t help, and generally makes things worse? It doesn’t take a disaster. Government won’t save you from poverty, from health problems, from crime, or from competing governments. It isn’t designed to help you; it is designed to hold, and increase, power. You are its annoying pet, or livestock to be sheared o...

    Paul Gessing, Guest columnist|Updated Jan 17, 2025

According to the latest budget analyses from the Legislature, New Mexico policymakers have nearly $900 million in “new” money available as the session begins in Santa Fe. This comes on top of massive surpluses in recent years that the Legislature has largely spent or used to bolster the state’s already prodigious sovereign wealth funds, which now total $58 billion. In many states across the nation, policymakers of both parties would be fighting to see who can come up with...

  • Cleanup has to make room for sentimental value

    Betty Williamson, Local columnist|Updated Jan 17, 2025

I’ve been slogging through file cabinets in my house this month – a total of 11 drawers worth, to be specific – in an attempt to update and consolidate a system that is haphazard at best. Some of the contents are easy to discard, like decades-old receipts and warranties for appliances I no longer have. But others are infused with sentiment. Those are a challenge. Take for example “Horses bought and sold.” Keep in mind that we haven’t owned a horse in years. The last dated...
