  • Census more than simple headcount

    Tom McDonald|Updated Jan 21, 2020

Buried beneath the hyper-political year we’re about to have is something else that will shape our future. It’s time once again for a U.S. Census count. The U.S. Constitution requires a count every 10 years. More than a simple headcount, all sorts of demographic information is collected. And while the population counts are used to redraw the U.S. House of Representatives district lines every 10 years, other Census data are used in divvying up billions in federal dollars among the nation’s counties, municipalities and state...

  • Good to occasionally consider 'what if'

    Kent McManigal|Updated Jan 21, 2020

Everyone would be smart to consider “what if?” — especially where their beliefs and assumptions are concerned. While it’s not healthy to dwell on it until the thought paralyzes you, “what if I’m wrong?” is essential if you like being correct. What if I’m wrong about everything I believe? • Senator deserved more time behind bars

    Updated Jan 21, 2020

At least New Mexico state Sen. Richard Martinez was sentenced to jail time. But he got off too easy. This month, Martinez was sentenced to five days behind bars for his conviction, after a trial, for driving drunk and slamming into a car stopped at a red light in Española last June. Two people in the other car were hurt, including the driver, Johnny Sisneros, who says his neck, back and hip injuries have prevented him from resuming work as a security officer. The senator, Sisneros said, “never displayed any remorse and ha...

    Mathew Brock - Staff|Updated Jan 21, 2020

CLOVIS — Parents beware: Google Chromebooks issued to students by Clovis Municipal Schools may not always prevent children from being exposed to inappropriate content. A Clovis parent learned this lesson recently after she said her child received sexually explicit messages while using a school-issued computer at home. The parent, whose name is being withheld by The News to safeguard the student's privacy, said her child was playing an online Facebook game called “Immortal Night” when sexually explicit messages and propo...

    Mathew Brock - Staff|Updated Jan 21, 2020

CLOVIS — A $20,000 discrepancy found during the audit of local American Veterans Post #14 has grown more than tenfold. A five-month investigation turned up over $233,000 in debts and missing funds, according to Post 14’s board of trustees and the AMVETS Department of New Mexico. The doors of the local post closed last July as AMVETS District VI began an investigation. Local leadership and post members said they were confused as they arrived to find the locks changed and sparse information available on the situation. In Sep...
