Hey bud. That’s how New Mexico State Police officer Justin Hare of Logan greeted Jaremy Smith when he found the South Carolina man stranded with a flat tire on the side of Interstate 40 in the early hours of March 15. Twenty seconds later, as Hare told Smith he would get him a ride to town, Smith shot the officer in mid-sentence. The 33-year-old went to the driver’s side and opened the door, waiting until an approaching semi passed to shoot Hare twice more. An hour later, Sta...

FARWELL – Farwell's girls felt pretty good about their chances against Olton in Friday's District 3-2A matchup. Whether they felt so good they expected a 58-point win over the Fillies is another question. Senior Makylee Baldwin posted 18 points for Farwell while senior Landri Richey tallied nine of her game-high 16 points in the opening stanza, and the Lady Blue were off to the races in a 76-18 obliteration of Olton. With the win, Farwell improved to 25-3 (5-0 district) and e...

Eastern New Mexico University's men broke the century barrier for the second game in a row on Saturday, but the result was much different. Playing with more passion on the defensive end, the Greyhounds scored the game's first 10 points, weathered a brief run by Western New Mexico and then rolled to a 101-72 Lone Star Conference victory at Steve Loy Arena. It came on the heels of a puzzling 110-101 setback against last-place Sul Ross State two nights earlier. "Our guys...
MELROSE – Junior Skyla Wicker scored the go-ahead basket with 25 seconds left and Melrose survived a 3-point attempt by Logan at the buzzer to notch a 43-41 win on Monday night. In the boys matchup, the Class 1A top-ranked Longhorns (12-0) handed Melrose (9-4) an 85-61 setback. The longtime district rivals are now in opposite districts, and the games were added to help replace games lost when the EPAC tournament was canceled due to weather earlier this month. The girls’ contest seesawed back and forth. Melrose led by two poi...
LOVINGTON – Clovis High girls coach Jeff Reed realizes his team needs to be pushed a bit before starting District 4-5A action later this month. On Saturday, the Lady Wildcats got pushed. Senior post Katy Archey went 9-for-9 from the free throw line and scored 17 points, leading four CHJS players in double digits. Sophomore guard Gianna Cordova added...
ALAMOGORDO – Portales High’s boys overcame bus problems on the way out and Alamogordo during the game, pulling out a 66-64 overtime victory over the Tigers on Saturday night. The Rams’ bus broke down on the way to the game. A bus from Capitan was summoned and got the team to its destination, with the contest starting a bit late as a result. PHS (7-9) opened a 31-23 halftime lead, but was outscored 17-8 in the third stanza and trailed by a point entering the final frame. “We could never get away from them,” Rams coach Ty...
The past few months have been an uneasy time for Black Americans, who wonder what the future will hold with Donald Trump back in the White House. Trump’s reelection has understandably raised considerable concern within Black communities about the status of civil rights protections. In a nation where white people make up 75% of voters, 60% of white men voted for Trump, while Latino men split almost evenly between both candidates. Black men voted overwhelmingly for Harris, b...
Praise the Lord for his mercy. Joe Biden’s failed presidency has finally come to an end. As he proved last week in an interview and in his bitter farewell speech, Joe Biden is clearly suffering through the final stages of TDS – Trump Derangement Syndrome. Like those with Alzheimer’s, TDS victims suffer confusion, incoherence and bursts of anger. In Biden’s case, it also causes delusions of grandeur and amnesia. He was still telling USA Today that the withdrawal from Afghanista...
This year’s legislative session in Santa Fe, which began Tuesday, has the potential of being a highly productive session, owed to a record-setting surplus of funds and a still-ambitious two-term governor whose time is running out. This will be the last 60-day session for Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham. It’s boom times for state coffers and she and the state’s lawmakers now get to divvy up nearly $892 million in “new money” while a spending bill that tops $10 billion is being advanced by the Legislative Finance Committee...
We asked newspaper Facebook followers: Donald Trump is president again. What do you think? Will he make America great again? A sampling of responses: • No matter if you like or hate him, he's our president for the next four years. Just pray that our country gets better. – Richard Weaver • I'm just glad we have someone in office that isn't afraid to stomp on toes to get stuff done. – Danielle Beevers • Weird. I thought eggs were going to be 99 cents today? – Penny Ortega • Fi...

All notifications will go out through HyperReach,” said Clovis/Curry County Emergency Management Director Ruthann Kelly. “HyperReach is a great addition to the community. Board president is Sherri Dewitt from First Financial Credit Union of Portales. “Pastor, I don’t get anything out of church. I can worship God just fine by myself. Why do I need to get together with a bunch of people I don’t know or like?” That’s a common objection. It gets stated differently here and there, but this is the gist of it. The farmer can feel close to God while he’s driving his tractor through a field at sunrise. The single person can sleep till noon on a Sunday and think nice thoughts about Jesus once they roll out of bed. The obvious answer to this is, “Amen!” Nobody’s saying it’s impos...
At last week’s Curry County Commission meeting, County Road Superintendent Walon Jones took a few moments to say thanks to residents who helped us all during the snowstorm of Jan. 9-10. Some brought out their tractors, loaders and such to help clean the icy roads and help motorists out of ditches. I compared that tale to the time long ago and not so far away that I got stuck in a snowstorm east of Amarillo. I had a radio job there and lived in a duplex in a place that used to be part of the Amarillo Air Force Base that closed...
Clovis celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. on Saturday and Monday with guest speakers and a memorial march, while looking back at the slain civil rights leader's efforts to bring equality to all. Some highlights: • The Clovis Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Scholarship breakfast brought in an estimated 500 people to the Clovis High School Cafeteria on Saturday. Former Second Judicial District Judge Tommy Jewell was the keynote speaker for the breakfast. He spoke to the group a...
SANTA FE — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham recently stopped to talk to people hanging out and camping in and around De Vargas Park in New Mexico’s capital city — just a short walk from the historic plaza and high-end jewelry shops. She said she saw drug paraphernalia, alcohol and an individual with a visible gunshot wound, but not much desire for treatment. “I can’t get them to accept help, not one person,” she recalled during an interview in the Governor’s Office. The experience, she said, is not uncommon and underscores t...
On this date … 1946: A Curry County man and his son were awarded more than $700 by a district court jury. Thomas J. Stephens and his son Tommy Dale Stephens, 10, who lived five miles west of Clovis, sued Victory Bus, which operated between Clovis and the Clovis air base. The Stephens’ alleged a Victory Bus was being operated recklessly when it struck the boy, who was running across the highway after exiting a school bus. The boy suffered a broken leg, broken hand and other injuries and was hospitalized for 13 days. Att...
At the stroke of midnight on Sunday, TikTok users in the United States were momentarily silenced, after the Supreme Court unanimously upheld a new law, which requires the social media app’s Chinese owner to sell off TikTok’s U.S. business or face a nationwide ban. Within hours of the shutdown however, President-elect Donald Trump announced he plans to issue an executive order that would grant ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, a 90-day extension to locate an appro...
