It is interesting to read about the government's solution to cutting the deficit — freeze government salaries, charge for Tricare, figure out ways to negatively impact the military, and even cut Saturday mail deliveries. I've never seen any proposals to cut foreign aid. We are sending $1.3 billion a year to Pakistan, the protectors of Osama Bin Laden, $498 million to Nigeria whose computer scams are known worldwide. Haiti gets $365 million without much to show for it. Zimbabwe, where white farmers are being kicked off t...
While it is commendable that Clovis Community College is willing to support the literacy council (March 23 article in CNJ), the loss of the Curry County Literacy Council's one-to-one tutoring program will have a negative impact on the low-level readers in Curry County, where the demonstrated need is so great. We trained and certified their professional volunteer tutors to work one-to-one with low-level adult literacy students. They did not receive training to work in the classroom, and this population can't learn to read in...
Tax revenues could be better spent What a contrast in the two big items on the front page of Thursday's CNJ: The Hotel Clovis project is under way because there was money found to fund it, but the dairy festival is called off because of the tough economy. Do you think anyone noticed that funding for the hotel project is taxpayer backed but the dairy event would be funded by the businessmen and women of the dairy industry? Clearly there is enough money to spend when it's not yours ... when it belongs to someone else. Tax...
Fundraiser nets nearly $5,000 A fundraiser dinner, dance and silent auction for the Melrose Tire Shop held Jan. 15 in Melrose netted $4,895. The money will help defray rebuilding costs for the tire shop, which was damaged in an October fire. The owner, Dale Bigler, did not have insurance for the property and will likely need to spend $400,000 on rebuilding the business — which featured a tire shop, convenience store and restaurant. Future events are planned, and donations are still being accepted at the shop. For information,...

We all get consumed by everyday life. Sometimes we lose sight of what's really important. We try to make up for it here and there, never thinking to look at those around us in need. I for one am guilty of this. This year my husband and I were plagued by bad luck. We are now living with my brother-in-law and his wife. The feeling of not having our own home saddened us, but in all we have truly been blessed by our family and friends. We have been getting by and making changes necessary in our lives in order for it to get...
Old Josh Blocher had a problem with Muleshoe. He said its residents were thieves, stealing the Bailey County seat that belonged to the community Blocher created seven miles to the west, called Progress. Blocher had no love for Farwell residents either. He called them devils. He said they claimed Lariat was the only stop between Muleshoe and the state line — intentionally ignoring Progress and its 300 residents. But those who knew him told the Amarillo Daily News that Blocher didn’t really have any enemies. J.R. King, m... Full story

Contractors not responsible for jail I find new Curry County jail administrator Gerry Billy's comment (in Wednesday's article), "Obviously the person who built the jail had never built a jail before," offensive. "The person who built the jail" is obviously a contractor. A contractor places a "bid" for a specific job, which is laid out by an architect. The contractor awarded the contract must follow these specific blueprints. This statement suggests "the person who built the jail" did so at their own hand. This blame rests on... Full story

I arrived home the other night to my wife toiling intently over a hot stove. “What ya got cookin’ there?” I asked. “Real chocolate pudding,” she answered. I inspected her work and asked why she didn’t have any white bread heels in the pot. That really puzzled her and I realized my dad had never made chocolate pudding for her before he died. The wife wanted to know why chocolate pudding was supposed to have bread crumbled into it because she had never had it that way herself. I said the only idea I had for why was that it add...

The following books are available at: Clovis-Carver Public Library "Boomerang: Travels in the New Third World" by Michael Lewis gives a guided tour through some of the far-reaching places hard hit by the fiscal tsunami of 2008, showing that cheap credit was the prelude to the global debt crisis that lies behind today's headlines, and how Europe's fiscal disaster puts the world at risk.
