  • Dawson getting accustomed to being "G" man

    Peter Stein|Updated Jan 25, 2018

NBA scouts and executives were impressed. So were other GLeague coaches. They were at the GLeague Showcase in Mississauga, Ontario earlier this month wondering who the guy was from the Greensboro Swarm cheering on his teammates from the bench, encouraging them all he could, even though he wanted playing time himself. The guy was John Dawson, a 2013 Clovis High graduate who had played college ball for Marquette and Liberty before signing with the Charlotte Hornets'...

  • ENMU men fall to West Texas A&M

the Staff of the News|Updated Jan 25, 2018

CANYON, TEXAS — For the second time this season, the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds proved they couldn’t keep pace with the powerful West Texas A&M Buffaloes. The ENMU men’s team lost at home earlier in the season by 30 to the Buffs, and didn’t fare much better on the road on Thursday night, falling 82-63. Right out of the gate, West Texas A&M (18-2, 8-2 Lone Star Conference) had Eastern’s number. The Buffs quickly stormed out to a commanding 13-4 lead, thanks to a layup from David Chavlovich and a 3 from CJ Jennings....

  • ENMU women upset WT on the road

The Staff of The News|Updated Jan 25, 2018

CANYON, Texas - Last Saturday afternoon, the Eastern New Mexico women's basketball team nearly made history, nearly rallying back from 26 down against Angelo State. However, that rally came up just short, as the Greyhounds missed a 3-pointer as time expired to tie the ballgame. Safe to say ENMU recovered. The Hounds (10-8, 6-5) proved that they still had a little fight in them from last weekend, as they visited 17th-ranked West Texas A&M and erased a 15-point second quarter de...

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico will open its 2018 indoor track and field season this afternoon, as the Greyhounds travel to Lubbock for the Texas Tech Red & Black Open. The event will be held at the Red Raiders’ new Sports Performance Center, with action beginning at 3 p.m. MST. “Texas Tech’s new facility is a really fast track, so it should be fun,” ENMU track and field coach Jeff Kavalunas said. “Our sprinters haven’t gone in awhile, but they’re coming off of a pretty good fall training session. Our sprinters and hurdlers ar...

Three arrests were made Tuesday while attempting to locate Brian Weiss, whom officials spoke to Wednesday night after issuing a news release about the investigation earlier that evening. The cooperative investigation started Monday between Cannon Air Force Base Office of Special Investigations and Clovis Police Department Special Operations Unit c...

  • Flu cases up in area

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Jan 25, 2018
    1

It’s that time of the year again. Cover your cough, wash you hands and schedule a flu shot because area hospitals have seen a considerable rise in patients with the flu over the past two weeks. Haylee Spence, director of planning, marketing and public relations for Roosevelt General Hospital, said the number of patients coming in with the flu is up from past years at this time. “We have seen a high number for this time of the year,” Spence said. “When they compared our numbers from last January to this year, we are seeing...

  • Reporter's notebook: From the ashes

    Updated Jan 25, 2018

In Greek mythology, when the phoenix died, a new one would soon rise from its ashes. That metaphor isn’t lost on the New Mexico Baptist Children’s Home, whose newest project is facing a major setback. A cottage on the Portales-based organization’s first satellite campus in Estancia was gutted by flames Sunday after a faulty fluorescent light ignited, according to an article on NMBCH’s website. While no one was hurt in the accident, the building — which was gifted to NMBCH — was compromised. NMBCH President Randy Rankin call...

Since forming on Jan. 2, the nine members of Troop 429 had worked to raise $204, which they donated to 15-year-old Carlos Nicolas of Farwell, who was battling bone cancer. Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Jan 25, 2018

PORTALES - A massive amount of mineral oil spilled out of a feed manufacturing facility and onto the streets of Portales on Thursday morning in what officials called an act of vandalism. J.D. Heiskell and Co. officials wrote in a news release that vandals broke into a facility, stole equipment, and opened a valve on a tank of mineral oil. The oil drained outside and covered a large area around downtown Portales, according to John DeSha, the city's public works director. "(The...

  • What I heard is not what they meant

Audra Brown, Down on the farm|Updated Jan 25, 2018

There are known to be stories of kids overhearing things that they shouldn’t from their parental figures. Such accounts vary from sad, to hilarious in their misinterpretations, to all spots in between. Some of the more adventurous fictions always led to a kid running off on an exploratory vacation that is always more temporary than it started out intending. If there was ever a moment in my recall that could be the seed for one of those, (given a normal dose of dramatic e...

  • So this panda walks into a cafe ...

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Jan 25, 2018

One of the most delightful (“filled with delight”) books that I’ve ever been given (thank you, Betty Little) is the “Runaway #1 British Bestseller” ‘Eats, Shoots and Leaves,’ by author and journalist Lynne Truss. I find it interesting, surprising, and incredibly encouraging that, at least back in 2003 when this book was published, folks had the good sense to buy it and propel it to bestseller status. You see, this is an incredibly humorous book about a subject crucial to th...

  • Put your efforts toward what's worthwhile

    Judy Brandon|Updated Jan 25, 2018

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Russian novelist, historian and short story writer said: “We always pay dearly for chasing after what is cheap.” Nowhere are these words truer than when thinking about the wickedness and self-scheming acts of those who are selfish and ruthless in their dealings with others. The sad truth is that wicked and spiteful actions on any level reflect the state of an individual’s heart. In addition, the end results of that scheming are shoddy, shameful, despi...
