  • Food at the speed of life: Little bit of spread adds a lot of taste

I’ve been experimenting with a novel spread. Awhile back, I looked through the book Roosevelt County Extension Home Economist Connie Moyers gave out at her annual Christmas program and discovered a recipe for Cranberry mustard. Connie gave me permission to print it: Cranberry mustard • 1 cup whole-berry cranberry sauce • 1/3 cup Dijon mustard • 1/4 teaspoon dried crushed red pepper • Stir together. Serve on grilled sandwiches — especially ham, white cheddar and thinly sliced apple on whole-grain b...

  • Military mama: Facebook opens doors for friendships

I love hearing from readers, it makes me happy to know that I’m not just spilling my guts with no one taking any note. Your friend requests on Facebook and stopping me in the store just to say “hi” make my day. I did meet my first “fan.” I say that, only because that’s how she introduced herself. I laughed and laughed. I feel like my role as a columnist is not only to provide a bit of entertainment and humor, but to also open up to you in a way that you are able to relate. When my fan asked me how I kept it all together, o...

  • ENMU class up in the air

    Alisa Boswell

The possibilities for a new course at Eastern New Mexico University are up in the air, literally and figuratively. Capt. James “Tripp” Johnson, a pilot at Cannon Air Force Base, is working on offering a non-credit skydiving course through the college’s Distance Learning program. Johnson, an instructor for the course, said he has always felt passionate about jumping and has been a certified jumper since 2003. He said his wife, Carly, originally suggested the idea of beginning a local skydiving certification course. “Init...

  • My turn: Goodbye doesn’t have to be complicated

It always amazes me how the simplest forms of entertainment are some of the best. All it takes is a box of eight multi-colored markers and a large piece of white poster board and you instantly have the attention of eight fully grown people. On Sunday, I attended a coworker’s going away party and I took a piece of poster board and some markers with me. I wrote “We will miss you” across the top of it in various bright colors then laid it on the table for everyone to sign. One of the other party guests had a different plan...

  • Commission member seeking alternative to tax hike

    Kevin Wilson

CNJ staff photo: Tony Bullocks Cindy Vaughan of Clovis, right, takes her change Thursday from Cindy Arnold, owner of Pet Logic on north Main Street, while purchasing a sweater for her pet Chihuahua Blackie. Arnold said she files gross receipt taxes every month. Clovis’ mayor hates the idea of a tax increase, but feels it’s the best way to ensure water in the community’s future. A member of the city commission isn’t so sure. At issue is a proposed .25 percent gross receipts tax increase. The Clovis City Commission can vote as...

John Schonberger’s busiest time of the year is the first half of April, when tax time comes up. CNJ staff

  • God provides strength to keep us on path

    Judy Brandon

A friend of mine was telling me of a childhood memory she has while growing up on a remote farm in upper eastern North Dakota. Betty lived with her parents and four siblings. Each member of the family had a designated job to keep the farm running. In the summer, it was fairly routine — plowing, planting, harvesting, feeding the animals, caring for the garden, canning and freezing, cleaning and laundry — we can all imagine what was on the list of chores. Summer...

  • The order of cars on this train matters

    Curtis Shelburne

Curtis K. Shelburne Samuel Taylor Coleridge uttered profound truth when he warned, “He who begins by loving Christianity more than Truth, will proceed by loving his sect or church better than Christianity, and end in loving himself better than all.” It’s a matter of priority. It’s like the toy train you might set up around your Christmas tree. The engine goes first, then the coal car, then the other cars, and finally the caboose. This train analogy, though, breaks down be...
