  • Buffs stand strong against ENMU men

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Jan 26, 2019

PORTALES - As one would expect of the No. 16 team in Division II, West Texas A&M's men have a pretty good chance to win if everybody on the Buffalo roster just plays an average game. But when one of the Buffaloes has a highlight game, the paths to a Lone Star Conference upset of WT quickly become slim and none. The former is what happened with Ryan Quaid, and the latter is what happened to Eastern New Mexico, which battled all night but could never make headway in a 74-69...

PORTALES - With Eastern New Mexico hosting its annual kids day, and Greyhound Arena awash in the screams of thousands of bused-in Roosevelt and Curry county children, women's coach Josh Prock had to be loud and animated just so his players could hear him in Thursday afternoon's contest with Texas Woman's. But down one with 0.2 seconds in overtime, and sophomore Jena Mehlbrech at the line? It was time to relax. "I sat down," Prock said of the final sequence. "I had all the...

  • Clovis teams split

    Peter Stein, Staff writer|Updated Jan 26, 2019

CLOVIS - Tuesday was a double-header night at Rock Staubus Gymnasium, featuring back-to-back Clovis basketball games with mixed results. The Clovis boys took care of Goddard 72-62; the Clovis girls fell short against Artesia, 68-61. Another building block for the Wildcats. For the Lady 'Cats, losing perhaps pushed them farther away from gaining consecutive state-tournament berths. Breaking away Clovis' boys team posted its 13th victory in 22 tries by taking care of a solid...

  • Rams pull upset

    Matthew Asher, Carlsbad Current-Argus|Updated Jan 26, 2019

CARLSBAD – Trailing Portales 48-44 with 10 seconds left, Carlsbad knew it would need help for a chance to send the game into overtime. A quick sprint after the inbound pass allowed Josh Sillas to drain a 3-pointer and get fouled, allowing the Cavemen a chance to tie the game with a free throw with 4.8 seconds left. The crowd's intensity picked up as Sillas, an 82 percent free throw shooter, went to the free throw line and prepared to send his team into overtime. The shot w...

  • Roswell blasts Portales

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Jan 26, 2019

PORTALES — As they largely rely on relentless defensive pressure, it doesn’t look like the Roswell Coyotes are going to die by the 3-pointer any time soon. Friday night, they certainly lived by it, as a mix of long-range shooting and an attacking defense turned a 30-21 halftime lead into a 76-44 clubbing of Portales at the Ram Athletic Center. Taymon Burrola and Tarren Burrola accounted for 42 points and 11 3-pointers as the Coyotes (15-5) won their fifth-straight heading into their Tuesday night game against Hobbs. The Coy...

  • Total turnaround

    Kevin Wilson, Editor|Updated Jan 26, 2019

PORTALES - You don't need an and-one or a long-range 3-pointer to make a statement in some girls basketball games. Sometimes, all you need to do is grab the loose ball, and do it again, and again, and again ... Portales didn't score on its opening possession Friday night against Clovis, but set the tone by grabbing three offensive rebounds on the play. The scoring picked up, and the rebounding effort never relented in a 57-32 win that was a measuring stick for both teams....

  • 'Cats top Dogs

CLOVIS — Friday’s Clovis boys basketball game at Rock Staubus Gymnasium could be considered a tune-up for District 4-5A play. But it was much more than that. By rolling to a 68-46 win over Artesia, the Wildcats’ second victory in a row and their fourth in the last five games, they took a step toward securing their place at the postseason table. “That game was a lot bigger than most people realize as far as what can happen to the district and the (state) playoff rankings,” Clovis head coach Jaden Isler said. “If we lose tha...

  • Clovis teams set to start district play

    Peter Stein, Staff writer|Updated Jan 26, 2019

CLOVIS — Though it may seem like high school basketball practice just started, it’s district time already. The games have counted for two months, but now is when they start counting even more, meaning even more. Clovis’ boys basketball team will open District 4-5A play at home, when Carlsbad visits Rock Staubus Gymnasium on Tuesday, tipping off at 7 p.m. The Clovis girls make their district debut at Carlsbad, also at 7 p.m. Tuesday. It’s huge for both teams, but perhaps even more so for the Lady Wildcats, whose state-t...
