  • McGee: Sometimes it's best not knowing

When I was a kid, my pals and I had the run of the neighborhood. We ran through front yards, we wore paths through backyards. The neighbors didn’t seem to mind. Maybe they did but they didn’t say anything. Then somebody new moved into the neighborhood. One day as we were dashing across his front yard he stormed out his front door yelling, “You kids, you daggone kids, get out of my daggone yard.” “Daggone” wasn’t the term he used but it’ll do for a family newspaper. We never crossed his yard again. Then there was the time wh...

  • In search of ponies: Mascot work isn't easy

    Sharna Johnson

They are included in all of the important days. OK, so most of the time they are ON the table, but they are included nonetheless. If they strictly went by symbolism, it’s a safe bet turkeys would never guess they were to be the guest of honor at dinners everywhere, albeit in the most unpleasant of ways. Maybe it has something to do with their faces and back-end plumes adorning napkins, plates, centerpieces, advertisements, greeting cards and more — the universal sign for Tha...

  • Small business patronage encouraged

CMI staff The Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce plans to boost its new “shop local” program during today’s Business Saturday. Dave Wagner

CMI sports writer [email protected] CANYON, Texas — The Farwell Steers thought if they could contain Wellington’s big plays, they could give the unbeaten Skyrockets a run for their money in a Texas Class 1A Division II regional game on Friday at West Texas A&M’s Kimbrough Stadium. Two-thirds of the time, they were successful — 26 plays for 54 yards. Unfortunately, the other 13 plays produced 405 yards and the experienced Rockets rolled to a 50-14 victory. Senior running back Terry Gilbreath was simply too much to handle,...

  • Hounds' rally falls short again

CMI staff CANYON, Texas — Junior guard Devon Branch, returning after missing four games with a knee injury, scored 27 points to lift Pittsburg State past Eastern New Mexico University’s men 86-84 on Friday in West Texas A&M’s Thanksgiving Classic. The Greyhounds, who trailed by as many as 10 points in the second half and by eight with one minute and 22 seconds to go, had a chance to win the game in the final seconds. After Rodney Blackmon made a pair of free throws to cut Pittsburg State’s lead to 85-84 with three seconds...

  • Young Cats expect growing pains

    Kevin Wilson

CMI staff writer [email protected] The fairest expectation for the Clovis Wildcats this year may be that it’s tough to know just what to expect. With the Wildcats set to host Rio Rancho tonight to open the season, third-year coach Matt King knows that Class 5A, and Clovis, has a lot of questions about the Wildcats, who sustained heavy graduation losses after finishing as the Class 5A runnerup. link CMI staff photo: Kevin Wilson Clovis senior Willie McCray brings the b... Full story
