Eastern New Mexico awoke to the season’s first snowfall and temperatures in the teens this morning. Icy road conditions led most area schools, including Portales, to delay starting times by two hours, officials said. Classes at Eastern New Mexico University were set to open at 11 this morning. Most area roads were open, but officials urged caution. Forecasters called for light snow this morning, but sunshine in the afternoon with a high temperature around 35. Officials predicted a high near 50 on Friday....
Editorial Prosperity is advancing in Mexico – but only to the most wealthy and those working in government-linked industries, according to a study released this week by the World Bank. It found great inequalities in wealth stemming from “concentrated wealth in the business sector; and unions in protected sectors, the heritage of corporatist institutional arrangements.” Corporatism is the system, most commonly associated with Mussolini’s Italy in the 1920s and 1930s, in which government, business and labor collude to control...
Sammi is one of those children for which parents have great expectations but a healthy dose of apprehension. In other words, her self-confidence was bound to get her into trouble now and then. As a 13-year-old ranch kid, she could rope and ride, do the chores, cook, read, shoot, and take care of herself like most kids reared up in a country raisin’. The family was over-nighting at one of the line camps on the forest. Sammi and her girlfriend had gone down to the creek to fish. She had been to the same camp many times and w...
I’ve been seeing a lot of red lately, and I’m not referring to my bank account. Yes, it has something to do with the red bows, lights and candy canes of Christmas, but there’s more. Have you ever noticed there is something about the color red that puts people on “red alert?” Teachers love the color red. It seems to blend in well with term papers they grade. On the other hand, students dread those red marks — so much so, that some teachers have caved in and now use more student-friendly marks such as purple and pencil. Pol...
The following column about Lane, our youngest son and his young daughter, Kallie gets to the heart of Christmas. I use it here with the permission of both as the story was told to me. Needless to say, I am one proud “Mawmaw!” It was Lane’s turn at church to serve communion to the elderly people who can’t make it to the church services. His youngest daughter, Kallie, went with him, clinging to her soccer beanie baby. She loved that doll more than anything! They went to serve the first person on the list at a local nursing... It seems everywhere you look there’s increased interest in Antarctica these days. The movie “Happy Feet,” featuring animated penguins, has been playing at the North Plains Cinema 7. Surely you remember last year’s “March of the Penguins,” the documentary about the Emperor Penguins and their mating ritual in Antarctica. This month’s “National Geographic” has a spread on the South Sandwich Islands, a few hundred miles from Antarctica’s frosty shores. Things about this place way south of Clovis got my mind wandering. I looked...

The recent snowfall impacted driving in Roosevelt County but no serious accidents were reported. According to Portales Police dispatcher logs there were about 10 accidents in a 24-hour span. “I assume that the accidents are weather-related since the number of accidents that we have had is a little unusual,” said Sgt. Brack Rains of the Portales Police Department. Rains said he responded to three accidents himself Thursday morning, two of which were weather-related. Wednesday there were about seven accidents reported and of...
Gaynelle Thomas was there when it began nine years ago and she’ll be in the middle of the preparations Saturday as Altrusa’s annual Holiday Happening gets under way at the Campus Union Building ballroom at Eastern New Mexico University. Thomas, and her daughter, Cozetta Moore, will each decorate two tables for this year’s gala fund-raiser. “It’s an elegant affair,” said Thomas. “To me, it starts the holiday season off.” Growing from 23 tables at the first event in 1998 to 67 at this year’s event, the Holiday Happening...

Hundreds of Ram fans huddled together outside of the Roosevelt County Courthouse on a frigid Thursday night, bundled in their warmest red clothes while cheering on their hometown Rams at a community pep rally. Lance Hill, a lieutenant with the Portales Fire Department, was among the Rams' supporters. “I’m real proud of them,” Hill said. “They’ve done a real good job, and hopefully they’ll continue with it and bring (a championship) home on Saturday. The one thing I’ve noticed about the Rams this year, is they’ve really come t...

Clovis residents have expressed concerns about the safety of portable classrooms. The school district currently uses 50 portable units, according to school officials. Cheryl Elliott’s twin grandsons are part of an Arts Academy at Bella Vista class of 24 that was housed in a portable too small for a class of that size, according to Clovis Fire Marshal Capt. A...

The burrowing owl is the subject of a Department of Defense study that includes Cannon Air Force Base and other Defense Department installations. (Courtesy Photo) A single feather holds the biography of a burrowing owl. The atoms inside can reveal its diet, its source of water, its birth place. Hoping to unlock the origins and migratory patterns of burrowing owls (so named because they nest in holes in the ground), Carol Finley and her colleagues have collected more than 1,000 owl feathers from military installations across... It’s early in the season, but the Eastern New Mexico University women’s basketball team might want to bottle the formula from Thursday’s Lone Star Conference crossover game against Southwestern Oklahoma. The Zias clicked on all cylinders for much of the game and, with no one playing more than 24 minutes, cruised to a 79-50 victory over the Lady Bulldogs at Greyhound Arena. Senior guard Heather Brown went 4-of-6 from 3-point range en route to 16 points, leading four players in double figures for ENMU (4-1). Senior guard Megan...
The Elida boys and girls basketball teams participated in the Anton Invitational basketball tournament Thursday. The Elida boys (1-1) got their first win of the young season, beating the hosts of the tournament, Anton, Texas 60-52. “We had great hustle, great defense, and an overall good team effort. We got lots of kids into the game, and lots of our kids scored,” Elida head coach Darrell Chenault said. The Lady Tigers (2-0) extended their unbeaten mark early in the season, topping Meadow, Texas 29-27. “We played prett...
Eastern New Mexico University’s Mikal Monette matched Southwestern Oklahoma’s Nate Perry in points and rebounds, but not in turnovers. On a night featuring 27 ENMU giveaways and poor outside shooting, the Bulldogs took advantage to beat the Greyhounds 80-65 Thursday night in a Lone Star Conference men’s crossover game at Greyhound Arena. Monette finished with 26 points and 10 rebounds on 10 for 10 shooting from the field, but the senior forward committed a team-high eight turnovers. Perry, a junior center, also tallied 26 poi...

This year, both are replacing key players but expect to be factors again in their respective classes. The Lady Rams (1-0) host Clovis (2-0) at 7:30 p.m. tonight in the first of...
