  • Clovis boys win district opener

    Peter Stein, Staff Writer|Updated Jan 29, 2019

CLOVIS — Normally, a 52-48 win for the Clovis boys basketball team in its District 4-5A opener would be cause for excitement. In the case of Tuesday’s game at Rock Staubus Gymnasium, cautious optimism would be more appropriate. The Wildcats did get that first district win, but they had to hold on after leading by 22 in the third quarter, so that tempered the excitement a little bit. Still, the ’Cats are 1-0 in district. They’ll take it. “Every district game is huge,” Clovis head coach Jaden Isler said. “However you can win ...

  • ENMU softball hopes for fun family season

    Peter Stein|Updated Jan 29, 2019

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico’s softball team will head to Albuquerque for its season opener against Fort Lewis (Colo.) this weekend with some uncertainty. And it goes beyond the basic question of how the Greyhounds will do this year. First-year head coach Kira Zeiter said Monday that her starting lineup wasn’t quite settled, at least as of the practice that was just wrapping up at blustery Greyhound Stadium. One thing Zeiter and her team seems certain about is how they...

  • QuiltStories - Amber Barnett

    Updated Jan 29, 2019

So you want the story behind this quilt? Well, Larrisa Small and myself were making a custom baby clothes quilt for a customer. This quilt literally took our blood, sweat, and tears. I cut my finger tips off while squaring up one piece. Larrisa took me to the hospital to see if they could reattach them, and they made me throw them away. So we came home and still finished the quilt that night. This will always be an unforgettable quilt! - Amber Barnett...

BROOKFIELD, Ill. — Paul Terry, who led Eastern New Mexico University with 989 rushing yards this season, was named a second-team All-American by the Don Hansen Football Committee Tuesday morning. Terry, a junior from Randall High School in Amarillo, is the fourth Greyhound running back to earn Hansen honors in the last five seasons, along with Kamal Cass, E’lon Spight and Tayshaun Gary. Terry, a first-team selection for the Lone Star Conference, was also a Hansen First Team All-Super Region Four selection. Terry had thr...

  • Clovis girls take meet

The Staff of The News|Updated Jan 29, 2019

HOBBS — Clovis’ regular-season-ending swim meet was held at Hobbs this past Saturday, in the same natatorium where the Wildcats will again be the Sunday after next for the District 3/4 championship meet. Will it be deja vu all over again? If Saturday’s high school meet was indeed a sign of things to come, the ’Cats seem to find Hobbs’ pool to their liking and may be able to have an impact at the district meet. In Saturday’s competition, Clovis’ girls captured first out of...

  • Hounds at halftime of LSC play

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Jan 29, 2019

PORTALES — The adage goes that you can only run halfway into a forest. Any farther, and you’re now running out of the forest. It’s already been an interesting journey through the Lone Star Conference forest for both the men’s and women’s basketball teams at Eastern New Mexico University. Both are at the halfway point of the conference schedule, with a first half that’s already included overtime dramatics and 4-on-5 stunners. On Thursday, both teams start running out of the...
